In a vibrant demonstration of institutional democracy, the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt has elected four of its members to serve as Senate Representatives in the University’s Governing Council. The election, held earlier today, was marked by active participation, transparency, and collegial spirit.

After a smooth and transparent voting process, the following distinguished professors emerged with the highest number of votes:
- Prof. Uzoma D. Chima
- Prof. Kelechi Okonta
- Prof. Chukwudi Ochi Onyeaso
- Prof. Olufemi Adesope
These scholars will now contribute their experience and insight to the Governing Council, the apex policy-making body of the University.
Transparent, Peaceful, and Fair Process
The election was conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect and democratic transparency, reflecting the University’s longstanding commitment to inclusive governance and institutional integrity. Members of the Senate freely exercised their right to vote, reaffirming their confidence in the University’s electoral process.

Preceded by Successful Congregation Elections
These Senate elections follow closely on the heels of the successful Congregation elections held during the 77th Meeting of Congregation on Thursday, 17th April, 2025, at the New Convocation Arena. The meeting drew a massive turnout, with members of the University’s Congregation casting their votes for representatives to the Governing Council, boards, and standing committees.
Following the conclusion of voting, the following members were elected to represent the Congregation in the Governing Council:
- Prof. Glory Amadi
- Dr. Caroline Nnabuo
Additional members of the Congregation were also appointed to various boards and committees, strengthening the University’s administrative inclusiveness and collaborative ethos.
A Spirited Shift in University Political Culture
The recent elections for both Congregation and Senate representatives have unveiled an unexpected wave of political intensity within the University community. What was once a relatively quiet and collegial tradition evolved into a spirited campaign season—characterized by strategic manifestoes, bold advocacy, and dynamic alliances.
This surge in political engagement not only highlights the growing significance of internal governance roles, but also reflects the depth of political consciousness within the ivory tower. In a space typically revered for scholarship and academia, governance, influence, and representation are now being pursued with equal passion and deliberation.
“The campaign was something else.”
This quote from a faculty member captures the energy and intensity of a season that proved democracy is very much alive and evolving at the University of Port Harcourt.
Looking Ahead: Collaborative Governance for Institutional Growth
The University Administration congratulates all the newly elected members from both Senate and Congregation and encourages them to bring their expertise, integrity, and vision to bear in their new roles. As members of the Governing Council, they are expected to contribute meaningfully to the strategic direction and continued advancement of the University.
“We look forward to a new chapter of enlightened leadership and collective progress. The strength of our institution lies in the diversity and dedication of those who serve it.”
