INTRODUCTION International Trade is the exchange of capital and consumer goods and services among nations. The strongest case for international trade is that it promote rapid economic growth and development. Over the years, there have been fundamentals structural changes in the global economy. These structural changes include globalization, trade and payments liberalization, tariff reforms, rapid integration of national economies and shift in macroeconomic management from regulation to deregulation. Unfortunately, many developing economies especially in Africa, are yet to actually benefit from their trade with the advanced economies of the world. Specifically, African economies are still characterized by sluggish economic growth, rising and unstable interest and exchange rates, inflationary pressures, poverty, mass unemployment, huge public debt and persistent balance of payments deficits. These developments have therefore thrown major challenges to African leaders and macroeconomic managers in terms of the formulation and implementation of trade policies. In the light of the foregoing, the University of Port Harcourt, in partnership with the African Busines Roundtable (ABR) recently established the Bamanga Tukur Institute for International Trade and Development (BTI). The Institute will serve as a platform for continental integration of the African economy into the global economy and ensure poverty reduction.
