THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT (19th – 23rd May, 2025)

The following events took place from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd May, 2025

  1. As part of our quality assurance and quality control measures for full resumption of academic activities across the College/faculties, we undertook on the spot assessment to lecture halls across the university. We commend the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Development, Professor Iyeopu Siminialayi who met administering lectures to his students.
  2. We received a team from NELFUND who visited the University Management as part of their awareness initiative to expand the subscription of students to the Fund. We discussed wide range of issues varying from the encountered challenges to the overall benefit of the scheme to both students and the University. We assured them of increase sensitization programmes in the University.
  3. A Public Lecture was held in honour of revered Professor C.S. Nwodo who retired from the services of the University. As part of activities lined up for his burial ceremony, the astute scholar was eulogized by his colleagues in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the growth of the Department of Philosophy and by extension the society.
  4. The Hippocratic oath was administered to the newly inducted Dental Surgeons from the Faculty of Dentistry, College of Health Sciences of our University. We commended both the College and Faculty of Dentistry for their unwavering effort and charged the new dental surgeons to serve humanity and their fatherland with pride and resist the growing japa syndrome.
  5. The auditorium of Crab was filled to brim as Nollywood actors, contemporaries and mentees of late Columbus Irosoanga joined the University community for a Night of Tributes and playlets in honour of an accomplished thespian whose face serenaded the movie industry. It was a night of tributes and candlelight procession for the fallen hero – the late Iyoo (the great warrior). Indeed, a great iroko has fallen, farewell Orukoro.
  6. We honoured an invitation from the Sole Admdinistrator of Gokana Local Government Area, Rivers State, Professor Gospel Kpee for the training of teachers at the Local Government Council. The event which had several accomplished educators and trainers as resource persons was aimed at repositioning basic education at the grassroot for global competitiveness.
  7. We participated in the 6th Synod of Ikwere Diocese of the Anglican Communion held at St. Martin’s Anglican Church, Omagwa District. Drawing inference from the theme of the Synod “To Whom Shall We Go”, we urged the delegates to join the army of faithful and fearless disciples in the propagation of the gospel.
  8. We stopped over at the food and beverages practical of the Hospitality and Tourism Management Department, Faculty of Management Sciences. The University of Port Harcourt will continue to provide the platform for students to take advantage of the growing and lucrative tourism and hospitality industry.
  9. E-learning is the new normal, hence, we received the National Universities Commission (NUC) team on Post-Validation who were on ground to inspect and assess our facilities at the ODEL Centre for the Award of online degrees by the Open and E-Distant Learning Centre. we are glad to inform that the University of Port Harcourt is digitally compliant.
  10. The Deputy Public Affairs Officer of the United States of America Consulate, Amanda Roach Brown led some other members of her team on a courtesy visit to the University Management. The team was in the university to further develop the strategic partnership between the United States consulate, Lagos and the University specifically the American Corner at the Donald Ekong Library.
  11. The Ecological Society of Nigeria (ECOSON) held her 2025 Conference here at the University of Port Harcourt. The hybrid conference which focused on wetland ecosystem, climate change and socio-economic development had robust sessions with scholarly presentations. Honorary fellowships were also conferred on deserving members.
  12. A high-powered delegation from the Environmental Protection Agency of Gambia was at the University on a tour to assess the INRES programme and evaluate research outcomes and impact on natural resources and the environment in the Niger Delta. The University continues to maintain collaboration with the Gambia Environmental Ministry, a partnership that has yielded enormous benefits to the agricultural sector of the country. The team visited some historic sites in the University including the Gambia Ama and Banjul Circle.
  13. The Governing Council of the University held her Emergency Council Meeting on Friday 23rd May, 2025. Afterwards, the Pro-Chancellor and other members of Council paid an unscheduled visit to the Solar Farm project site. The construction engineers and consultants took the team on a guided tour of the facility.
  14. We received some students of the Theatre and Film Studies Department who came to felicitate with the University Management on our student friendly policies and presented a portrait as a token of their appreciation
