THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT

The following events took place in the University from Monday, 19th August – Friday, 23rd August, 2024.

1. As a way of deepening the cordial relationship with all strata of the University community, the Pro-Chancellor, Senator Moa Ohuabunwa in company of the University Management had series of stakeholder engagement meetings with the Provost and Deans of faculties, University-based Unions, Students’ Union Executive Council and other relevant stakeholders to set the agenda for a more prosperous University.

2. In continuation of mentorship to the Herbert Wigwe University, we received the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi to strengthen the existing bond between both institutions.

3. Universities world over are guided by international best financial practices. At the budget defence by all departments and units in the University, we harped on the need for proper budgetary projections and implementation to optimize resources.

4. ⁠We held a crucial meeting with Faculty presidents to harmonize plans for the forthcoming elections across all the faculties to usher in a new executive. As a way to maintaining the existing peace in the University, all stakeholders committed to a free and fair process.

5. In preparation for the 2024/2025 accreditation exercise by the National Universities Commission, we received the Director of Local Affiliation, Prof. G. G. Kpee and members of the Unit to firm up arrangements for the process.

6. We were at the College of Health Sciences where final Part V MBBS examinations were considered. We congratulated the College on the new set of 70 Medical Doctors and for their commitment over the years

7. In preparation to host the 2024 National Gallery Conference, we received the Local Organizing Committee and members of the Department of Fine Arts and Design and urged them to deliver a world-class conference.

8. In appreciation and recognition of our modest contributions to advancing the frontiers of education and the society at large, we received the following awards:

* Award of Excellence from the National Union of Izon Ibe Students

* The Distinguished Human and Managerial Excellence Award by the Assemblies of God Church – Rumuosi/Rumuekini Central 

* An Award of Excellence by Association of Science Laboratory Technologist of Nigeria (ALSTON) for outstanding contributions to the Association.
