PROFILE OF THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT

The Muslim Community University of Port Harcourt began the weekly Juma'at prayer on campus in 1993. The objectives and ethics of the Community are based on the Qur'an and Sunnah and it is non-sectarian. In 1995, the authority of the University of Port Harcourt allocated a space to the Muslims Community for the construction of a Mosque.

The Senate of the University of Port Harcourt at her 185th meeting held on July 26, 1995, approved 1:00 – 2:00 pm on Fridays for the observance of the weekly Juma’at prayer by the Muslims.

The activities of the Muslim Community are supported by the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSS) and the Community provides mentoring and spiritual trainings for them to achieve academic excellence.

The 7th Vice-Chancellor University of Port Harcourt, in February 2011, set up an Inter-Religious Harmony Committee and the Muslim Community of the University Port Harcourt has been actively involved.

The Chairman of the Muslim Community is Professor Bashir O. Braimoh, a Professor of Community Dentistry in the Department of Preventive Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, College of Health Sciences.
