Mgt Inaugurates Bioethics Steering C'ttee By Humphrey Ogu

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, has inaugurated a Steering Committee for the University of Port Harcourt Unit of the International Chair in Bioethics. The Inauguration took place at the Vice-Chancellor's Committee Room on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.

Inaugurating the Committee on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Regina Ogali, stated that the terms of reference of the Committee included advising and serving as the primary advocacy source for the dissemination of bioethics knowledge in the University of Port Harcourt.

Other terms of reference are: “To provide courses or seminars for the advancement of bioethics, stimulate research in bioethics and other areas of academic endeavour, encourage the production of newsletters, journals and books on bioethics, organise local, national and regional conferences on bioethics, and submit an annual report on the Committee's activities. The Committee is also charged with the mandate of suggesting its future plans to the Vice-Chancellor for presentation to the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics,” amongst others.  

In his acceptance speech, Chairman of the Committee, Professor Osaretin Odia of Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, expressed joy at the inauguration of the Committee. “I am glad that we have been fully inaugurated and we can now swing into action. Since we were appointed last year, we have been working informally. I wish to on behalf of other members, assure the Vice-Chancellor that we are determined to succeed in the discharge of our onerous mandate,” he said. The Chairman noted that the essence of bioethics was to ensure that research was conducted in line with global best practice that recognises local circumstances.

Other members of the Committee are Professors Christie Mato, Victor Wakwe, Iyeopu Siminialaye, Alice Nte, Rollings Jamabo, Olubusuyi Kilani, Walter Ihejirika, and Dr. Charles Tobin-West, while Mr. Webilor Chuku and Mrs. Blessing Sibor, are to serve as Secretary and Assistant Secretary, respectively.
