Lecturer Endows Prize To Promote Excellence In Computer Science By Otikor Samuel

As part of his resolve to promote academic excellence among students, a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, Dr. Barilee Baridam, has endowed an annual prize for the Best Graduating Student in the Department. Already, a cheque for the first tranche of payment has been handed over to the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) as proof of Dr. Baridam's determination to ensure speedy implementation of the initiative.

Dr. Baridam spoke to a UniPort News Correspondent shortly after presenting the report of an Endnote Workshop to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi in his office at the Senate building. Dr. Baridam revealed that he facilitated a workshop for his colleagues at the ICTC Cyber Café on Wednesday, May 23, 2018. He disclosed that the endowment would be sustained through proceeds from the sale of subsidised software during the workshop, which according to him, would henceforth be organised on an annual basis.

“I have decided that after deducting the expenses, the monetary proceeds from the EndNote Workshop will be given to the Best Graduating Student in the Department of Computer Science at the next Convocation Ceremony as a way of promoting academic excellence among our students. This will be my contribution to encourage and motivate our Full-Time Undergraduate students to work hard and strive towards academic excellence,” Dr. Baridam stated. In the report on the Endnote Workshop he presented to Professor Fawehinmi, dated May 24, 2018, Dr. Baridam expressed satisfaction at what he described as the huge success recorded at the maiden workshop.

“I was really humbled by the large number of staff and students who converged at the ICTC Café to participate in the workshop. The three-hour event  attracted Professors, Senior Lecturers, early-to-mid-career scholars, Postgraduate and Final Year students. A total of 56 participants registered at the workshop.” Dr. Baridam promised to organise a similar research-based workshop on LaTex to enhance the productivity of staff.
