Principal Officers Fete Owhonda-Wopara By Otikor Samuel

In line with its established tradition in respect of disengaging colleagues, the Principal Officers' Meeting held a farewell gathering on Friday, January 11, 2019 to honour the immediate past Acting Bursar, Mrs. Helen Owhonda-Wopara in recognition of her meritorious services to the University in that capacity for the past 10 months.
Speaking during the event which held at the Council Chambers in the Senate Building, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, showered praises on Mrs. Owhonda-Wopara for contributing positively to the growth of the University through the quality services she rendered in the Bursary Department.
“We are here to honour a colleague who distinguished herself through remarkable service delivery towards the growth of the University. I wish to state that apart from the DV-C (Academic), Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi and myself, the other Principal Officers are women and all of them share the same character traits of utmost composure, team spirit, quiet disposition, but highly productive in the line of duty. We thank God that the opportunity of heading the Department also got to Mrs. Owhonda-Wopara, even though in acting capacity at the twilight of her career. As an established tradition, we are here to wish the former Acting Bursar well and bid her a befitting farewell as she proceeds on her well-earned pre-disengagement leave from the services of the University,” the Vice Chancellor said.
Other Principal Officers, including the Deputy Vice Chancellors in charge of Administration and Academic matters, Professors Regina Ogali and Fawehinmi, the Registrar, Mrs. Dorcas Otto and the new Bursar, Dr. Felicia Ayuwo, took turns to shower encomiums on Mrs. Owhonda-Wopara for her candour and quality services to the University.
In her response, Mrs. Owhonda-Wopara, who was visibly overcome by the emotional weight of the occasion, expressed gratitude to God for the grace to retire in good health and without blemish in her long public service career. The former Acting Bursar also expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor and other Principal Officers, including her successor for the love and support extended to her during her time in service.
“I am delighted to be called out today to be honoured and appreciated by the University of Port Harcourt with this parting gift. This perhaps will be the last time I would be in your midst as a tenured staff. I will no doubt, miss your solidarity and comradeship as I retire from service after 35 years in the Bursary Department. Most remarkable was that even at the twilight of my career, I was recommended to head the Bursary Department as Acting Bursar for 10 months and 3 weeks, which I least expected. My gratitude knows no bounds for being so elevated to the pinnacle of my career.
“The experience I gathered during my tenure as Acting Bursar at this moment of my career in the services of the University of Port Harcourt is beyond description and cannot be overemphasised. Today, my joy knows no bounds because I am leaving the University of Port Harcourt with my head high and in sound health,” Mrs. Owhonda-Wopara recounted.
The highpoint of the event was the presentation of a sealed gift item to the erstwhile Acting Bursar and a group photograph.
