By Ethel Timi-Johnson

The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow to the Institute of Natural Resources, Environment and Sustainable Development (INRES), Professor Jimmy Adegoke, has disclosed plans for a proposed partnership between the University of Port Harcourt and the University of Missouri-Kansa City (UMKC). “At the end of the one to two years exchange programme, the students would receive an undergraduate degree of the University of Missouri-Kansa City. To qualify for the programme, participants would meet a minimum academic standard requirement which would be jointly determined by both institutions. The selected students would also benefit from a scholarship programme that reduces the annual tuition to a level very close to that of the UMKC in-state tuition. Other opportunities of the institutional partnership would benefit younger academics and doctoral candidates who would serve as visiting scholars to UMKC,” Professor Adegoke said.
In her response, INRES Director, Professor Aduabobo Hart commended Professor Adegoke for facilitating the partnership aimed at lifting the standard of education in the University. She also expressed gratitude to the University of Missouri-Kansa City, the Carnegie Foundation while hoping that the partnership would be strengthened to yield fruits in the long run.
On the research component of the proposed partnership, he noted that the research on Coastal Communities and How to Better Manage the Impact of Climate Change would bring together a diverse and interdisciplinary group of researchers from participating universities in the United States, institutions and agencies from several countries along the West African coast, University of Port Harcourt, the African Development Bank amongst others. “The research and training would be delivered both in the United States and at partner institutions in West Africa with reciprocal exchange of researchers from these organisations.  A key outcome of this research partnership would be the creation of a strong, self–sustaining research and innovation community that would continue to deliver solutions for decades to come,” he added. In her response, INRES Director, Professor Aduabobo Hart commended Professor Adegoke for facilitating the partnership aimed at lifting the standard of education in the University.
