No More Stagnation in Staff Growth in UniPort

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Georgewill Owunari, says his administration has a 'zero tolerance' for delays in statutory staff promotion in the University. The Vice Chancellor said this during a Press Conference held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at the Council Chambers. The Vice Chancellor who expressed his appreciation to members of Council for their cooperation, said his administration at inception, made staff promotion a point of priority due to challenges of delays in staff growth opportunities before his assumption of office.

It will be recalled that upon assumption of office, the Vice Chancellor had pledged that “no one will be denied his or her promotion when due.” A look at his inaugural address on July 14, 2021, indicates that out of the 18-point agenda he unveiled as his administration's blueprint, staff and students' welfare featured prominently and dominated the entire speech. The blueprint which covers staff promotion, research and training opportunities, provision of quality teaching and learning aids, flexible fees payment options for students, campus safety and security, peaceful and harmonious environment, and open-door policy; represent the general expectations of the average staff and students of the University.

The Vice Chancellor told Journalists that the promise has been kept by ensuring that all barriers are removed. “There is no more delay in professorial appointments. Before my assumption as the Vice Chancellor, we had an old structure which also did not provide for career progression,” he said.

A good number of teaching and nonteaching staff have received promotion or conversion from one cadre to another. Over 200 teaching staff have been promoted to the next higher ranks. The Vice Chancellor also informed Journalists that his administration was embarking on the construction of new infrastructure while also completing and refurbishing existing ones.

He expressed gratitude to his predecessors, the federal government, R t . Hon Rotimi Amaechi and Governor Nyesom Wike for their support at various times.
