As part of plans to raise the standard of the University of Port Harcourt, steps are to be taken to model the institution after some Ivy League schools, especially, in the area of research and development strategies.
The new Pro-Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt, Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa made this known during a familiarisation visit to the school recently. He said that modelling the university after the Ivy League schools would facilitate growth and address challenges that world-class institutions like Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge may have been able to solve.
According to him, the more advanced universities have set benchmarks in research management, intellectual property policies and quality assurances that UniPort can leverage. Adding that the plan would also enhance academic standards, and research capabilities as well as foster intemational collaborations on specific issues.
Sen. Ohuabunwa said that if well executed, the plan would also contribute to the financial stability of UniPort through the commercialisation of research and intellectual property, even as more effort would be made to attract funding from individuals and corporate friends, with whom strategic partnerships can be built.
The Pro-Chancellor said that efforts would be made to improve governance structure, quality of teaching, research and transparent financial management in the school.
He said that in the implementation of the comprehensive 4-year plan, there will be improved operations through the use of performance targets and measurable indicators to track progress.
According to him, even as UniPort is among the highly sought-after universities in Nigeria, steps must be taken to raise the bar, not only to be among the best in Africa but to be competitive globally.
