DECISIONS OF THE SENATE OF THE UNIVERSITY ON APPEAL ON 2015/2016 PAYMENT OF SCHOOL CHARGES AND REGISTRATION

DECISIONS OF THE SENATE OF THE UNIVERSITY ON APPEAL ON 2015/2016 PAYMENT OF SCHOOL CHARGES AND REGISTRATION

At its 439th Meeting held on Friday, 10thAugust, 2018, the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt received and considered the appeal in respect of the students who were affected sequel to the implementation of “No Registration, No Examinations Policy” and subsequent withdrawal of results (semester and degree) for those who were not eligible to graduate in the 2015/2016 session. Senate recalled various decisions taken by it in furtherance of the implementation of the “No Registration, No Examination Policy” of the University.  The Senate of the University specifically recalled that at its 422nd Meeting (Extraordinary) held on Friday, 10th June, 2016, it, among other pleas of the students, approved two installmental payment of school charges with effect from the 2016/2017 session and extended the implementation of the “No Registration, No Examination Policy” to Second Semester of the 2015/2016 session.

Senate also recalled that at its 432nd Meeting (Extraordinary) held on Thursday, 20th July, 2017, it received and considered a Report on the compliance with the “No Registration, No Examinations Policy”, with regard to the results of 2015/2016 Second Semester Examinations and noted that the results of “students” who had not paid their school charges for the 2015/2016 session as at the deadline for registration (i.e. 4th October, 2016), were presented to it and used to compute the degree results of some students for their graduation.  Consequently, Senate had directed, among others that:

  1. THE RESULTS OF “STUDENTS” WHO FAILED TO PAY THEIR SCHOOL CHARGES AND REGISTER FOR 2015/2016 SESSION BY THE DEADLINE (4THOCTOBER, 2016), SHOULD BE EXPUNGED FROM THE 2015/2016 SECOND SEMESTER RESULTS ALREADY APPROVED BY SENATE.

  1. THE DEPARTMENTS CONCERNED SHOULD EXPUNGE THE RESULTS OF “STUDENTS” WHO FAILED TO PAY THEIR CHARGES FOR 2015/2016 SESSION AND RE-PRESENT THE RESULTS USING THE APPROVED FORMAT FOR PRESENTATION OF CORRECTION OF RESULTS (i.e “OLD RESULTS” AND “NEW RESULTS”);

  1. THE CORRECTED RESULTS SHOULD BE PRESENTED AT THE STATUTORY MEETING OF SENATE ON 30TH AUGUST, 2017, USING THE APPROVED FORMAT;

At the 439th Meeting held on Friday, 10th August, 2018, Senate noted that from the records, a total of 1,227 (one thousand two hundred and twenty seven) “final year students” paid their school charges after 4th October, 2016. The above figure was made up of Year 4 for 4-year programme; Year 5 for 5-year programme; Year 6 for 6-year programme; including students in their 1st and 2nd extra-years. Senate also noted that it had earlier granted amnesty to students in their terminal extra year to graduate.  Records also show that some of the students so affected by the policy complied with the directive of the Senate of the University and duly registered in the 2016/2017 session, while others applied for temporary withdrawal from studies, and thereafter, resumed their studies.

Sequel to the implementation of the “No Registration, No Examination Policy” in the 2015/2016 session, there have been appeals by some of the affected students, parents/guardians and others, for consideration to enable the students to graduate from the University.

Having considered the pleas and noted the categories of the students affected, the Senate of the University at its 439th Meeting held on Friday 10th August, 2018, graciously approved that they be granted one academic session, that is, 2018/2019 session, to pay their school charges, register their courses, sit for examinations and graduate upon satisfying the graduation requirements.

It should be noted that this concession granted by the Senate of the University to the affected students is for one session (2018/2019) only.   Furthermore, for the avoidance of doubt, the students concerned are, by this concession, not required to pay school charges for the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 sessions.

For the avoidance of doubt the categories of the affected students are stated below:
