*THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT*
_The following events took place in the University from Monday 2nd September - Friday 6th September, 2024._
1. The 17th Governing Council of the University chaired by Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Sen. Moa Ohuabunwa, at its 185th meeting considered and approved recommendations from Appointment and Promotions Committee (Academic), Appointments and Promotion Committee (SPATS) and Junior Staff. Council also approved the commencement of the process for the appointment of a substantive Bursar and Director of Works and Services and the reconstitution of Council committees.
2. Also, the Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC), a statutory Council Committee met to exhaustively deliberate and take appropriate decisions and recommendations to the Governing Council for approval.
3. At the 10th Induction Ceremony, of the School of Science Laboratory Technology in conjunction with the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) performed an oath taking ceremony for new graduates. The oath taking and induction ceremony was conducted by the Director General and Registrar of NISLT. The guest lecturer, Prof. Ben Owhe-Ureghe charged the newly inducted Laboratory Technologists to carve a niche for themselves in the new world of technopreneurship. We commend the Ag. Dean, Dr. Kunle Sofolabo and members of the School of Science Laboratory Technology for a successful induction ceremony.
4. As a way of enhancing Town-Gown relationship, the University of Port Harcourt through University of Port Harcourt Entrepreneurship Centre, the Offshore Training Institute and Engineering Workshop entered into a partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the training of Niger Delta youths.
5. Professor Catherine Stanley has emerged as the new National President of the Nigerian Association of Pharmacists in Academia. The Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Sydney Aprioku led other faculty members to present Professor Catherine to the University Management as the President of NAPA. By assuming the position of the National President, the National Secretariat of the Association will now be at the University of Port Harcourt within the duration of her tenure. We urged Prof. Catherine to see the appointment as a call for service and the need to reposition the association for greater efficiency.
6. In preparation for the Students’ Union election, we met with stakeholders of the student body across the three arms of the Union and had a robust discussions to ensure a free and fair process that will lead to the election of a new student executive. The University Management reiterated its commitment to non-interference in the election. We also received the electoral committee for the conduct of the student union election and charged them to discharge the assignment with high sense of credibility and responsibility.
7. As part of our avowed culture to celebrate excellence, we decorated the commander of our police protection team who was recently promoted to the position of an Inspector of Police. We commend his excellent attitude to service and proactive leadership since he assumed duty as head of our police protection team.
8. We received the Dean, Faculty of Computing and other members of the Faculty who came to present to the Management, the Prof. Stella C. Chiemeke’s Prize Award for Best Research in Doctorial Consortium won by a member of staff of the Faculty at the Nigeria Computer Society National Conference.
9. We are glad to announce the release of promotion list for Readership/ Professorship and hereby convey our hearty congratulations to all successful candidates 🎉🎈🎊.
10. In appreciation and recognition of our modest contributions to advancing the frontiers of education and the society at large, we received the following awards:
* Award of Appreciation from the Canadian Pure Breeds Institutions
* Award of Star Performer from the Nigerian Council of Educational Psychologists in recognition of our excellent performance in advancing quality education and infrastructural development.
