 APPLICATION FOR GRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN THE 2020/2021 SESSION

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the following Programmes:

 

 

 

 

A.  FACULTY OF HUMANITIES

All Humanities PhD Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5- point scale.  In addition, candidates must score a minimum of 60% in the admission interview to be found admissible.

 

1.  COMPARATIVE LITERATURE PROGRAMME

M.A. Comparative Literature

Ph.D Comparative Literature

Requirements for MA Comparative Literature Programme:

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 points on a 5-point scale or its equivalent in Literature from a recognized University. Graduates in English have to produce evidence of a minimum of two years (four semesters) academic exposure to French or another language of International communication.

African Language

There is a Special African Language requirement for the Comparative Literature Programme. Any candidate who is deficient in speaking, reading or writing an African language will be required to take an appropriate course in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies and produce evidence of having passed that course.

Requirements for Ph.D Comparative Literature Programme:

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Literature or M.A. Degree in other related disciplines in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.

 

 

2.  DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND FILM STUDIES

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

(i)  Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Theatre & Media Arts

 

Admission Requirements for PGD Programme in Theatre & Media Arts

To qualify for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma programme, a candidate must obtain a first Degree in the disciplines within the Humanities or a first Degree from any other discipline.

(ii) Master of Arts (MA), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:

(a)    Dramatic Theory and Criticism

(b)    Sociology of Drama

(c)    Film Studies

(d)    Theatre and Cultural Administration

(e)    Directing

(f)    Theatre History

(g)    Technical Theatre

(h)    Playwriting

(i)    Costume and Make-Up

(j)     Theatre in Education

 

Requirements for M.A. Theatre Arts

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree in Theatre Arts with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent in Theatre Arts from a recognized University.

Requirements for M.A. Theatre & Film Studies

Candidates must obtain a first Degree in Theatre and Media Arts or in a related discipline with a CGPA not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale.

Requirements for M.A. Film & Television Studies

Candidates must obtain a first Degree in Film/Television Studies or a related discipline with a CGPA of not less than 3.00on a 5-point scale.

Requirements for Master of Fine Arts (MFA - Professional) Programme in Film & Television Studies

To qualify for admission into the MFA (professional) programme, the candidate must obtain a first Degree in a related discipline to Film and TV Studies.

Requirements for Ph.D Theatre Arts

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Theatre Arts in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.

Ph.D in Film & Television Studies

Areas of Specialization:

Requirements for Ph.D in Film & Television Studies

Candidates must obtain a Master’s Degree in Film/Television Studies.  The following CGPAs and point scales will be used:

(a) Candidates with Master’s Degree on a 5-point scale with a CGPA not

below 3.50.

(b) Candidates with Master’s Degree on a 4-point scale with CGPA not below 3.00.

(c)   Candidates based on percentage with not less than 60%.

       The Ph.D programme will run for a minimum of two years and maximum of five years for full-time mode of study and a minimum of three years and maximum of seven years for part-time mode of study.

 

Ph.D in Theatre and Media Arts

Requirement for Ph.D in Theatre and Media Arts

Candidates must obtain a first Degree in Theatre Arts.  CGPA requirements and duration of programmes are as stated in item a – c above.

 

 

3.  DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH STUDIES

(a)    M.A., Ph.D in Literature with emphasis on:

        (i)   Theory of Literature

        (ii)  African Literature

        (iii) African Oral Literature

(b)    M.A., Ph.D in English Language with emphasis on:

        (i)   Applied English Linguistics

        (ii)  English as a Second Language (ESL)

Requirements for M.A. English Studies

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent in English Studies from a recognized University.

Requirements for Ph.D English Studies

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in English Studies or related discipline with a CGPA of not less than 3.50 on a 5-points scale.

 

4.  DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

(i)     Postgraduate Diploma in French (PGDF)

(ii)    Postgraduate Diploma in Translation (PGDT)

(iii)   M.A. French in the following areas:

  1.         French Grammar and Linguistics
    1.         African Literature in French
      1.         French Literature

(iv)   M.A. Translation (English/French)

Requirements for M.A. Foreign Languages and Literatures

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent in Foreign Languages and Literatures from a recognized University or PGD Upper Credit.

Requirements for Ph.D Foreign Languages and Literatures

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.

 

5.  DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND DIPLOMATIC STUDIES

(i)  Postgraduate Diploma in History & Diplomatic Studies (PGDHDS)

Qualifications for Admission

To be eligible for admission into Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy, a candidate must have a good honours Degree not less than Third Class and a CGPA of not less than 1.50 and above in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Law and the Management Sciences.

(ii)  Master of Arts (M.A.)and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:

(a) Social & Political History

(b)   Economic History

(c)   Diplomatic & International Studies

 

Qualifications for Admission into the Masters Programme

To qualify for admission into the M.A Degree Programmes of the Department, candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent of the University of Port Harcourt or from any other recognized University in the relevant subjects.

Except for Archaeology/Cultural Heritage Management, candidates from non-History backgrounds will be required to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy before admission into the MA programmes.

(iii)  Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme.

 

Qualifications for Admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Programme

To be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy programme in History and Diplomatic studies, a candidate must have an MA/M.Sc Degree with a CGPA of 3.50 and above on a 5-point scale in History from any Nigerian University or abroad. Except for Archaeology, candidates from non-History backgrounds are expected to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomatic Studies to be admitted into Ph.D Degree programmes. In addition, candidates will be required to present a written proposal on a thesis topic in their chosen field and score a minimum of 60% in pre-admission oral interview.

 

6.  DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION STUDIES

(i)     Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies (PGDCS)

Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies:

To be eligible for admission into the programme, a candidate must have a good honours Degree in any field from any recognized University.  Candidates with HND Upper Credit are also eligible for admission into the PGD Programme.  Candidates with pass Degree will not be admitted.

 

Requirements for M.A. Linguistics & Communication Studies:

Candidates wishing to enroll in the Communication component must hold at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or a Lower Credit with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale in Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts.  Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.

 

Requirements for Ph.D Linguistics & Communication Studies

Candidates wishing to enroll in the Communication component must hold at least a Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.50 on a 5-point scale in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts.  Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.

 

7. DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

M.A., Ph.D in Philosophy in the following areas:

O’Level Requirements

All candidates must possess O’Level credit passes in five relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

Requirements for M.A. Philosophy

Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent in Philosophy (single honours) or combined honours Degree with Philosophy as a component.

Requirements for Ph.D Philosophy

Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in Philosophy with a CGPA of at least 3.50 or its equivalent in addition to the other faculty requirements.

 

 

8.  DEPARTMENT OF RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL STUDIES

i.  Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Religious & Cultural Studies

ii. M.A., Ph.D in Religious and Cultural Studies in the following areas:

(a)    African Indigenous Religion

(b)    Biblical Studies

(c)    Church History

(d)    Islamic Studies

Requirements for PGD in Religious and Cultural Studies:

Candidates must possess good honours Degree in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Law, Management Sciences, and Science from the University of Port Harcourt or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt.

Requirements for MA in Religious and Cultural Studies:

Admission to the MA programme will be open to candidates with the B.A. Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies, Islamic Studies, Theology or other related disciplines such as Philosophy, History, Sociology and Anthropology on a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale, from the University of Port Harcourt or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt

 

Requirements for Ph.D Religious and Cultural Studies:

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies in addition to the other faculty requirements.

 

 

9.  DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS & DESIGN

M.A; Ph.D in Fine Arts & Design in the following areas:

(a)  African Art History

(b) Design History

(c)  Painting

(d)  Sculpture

(e)  Ceramics Design

(f)  Graphics & Communication Design with Specialization in Advertising, Printmaking, Animation & Photography.

(g)  Textiles & Fashion Design

 

O’Level Requirements

All candidates must possess a minimum of five O’Level Credit passes which must include English Language and Mathematics in addition to other faculty requirements.

 

10.  DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC

(i)   Postgraduate Diploma in Music (PGDM)

(ii)  Master of Arts in Music

 

 

Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Music:

Candidates with first degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 on a 5-point scale in disciplines other than Music, with demonstrative competent potentials for music studies; or graduates with bachelor’s degree in Music with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 on a 5-point scale are eligible to apply.  HND holders in Music with appropriate CGPA may be considered.  In addition, all applicants into the programme shall be auditioned.

 

Requirements for Master of Arts in Music:

Candidates with a recognized University bachelor’s degree in Music, with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale, or as may be stipulated by the School of Graduate Studies from time to time.  Bachelor of Church Music (BCM) holders from a recognized theological institution or any other accredited institution may be considered for admission into the M.A. programme if their transcripts reveal that the courses and tutelage covered in the BCM programmes are equivalent to those in Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music programmes of conventional higher Institutions.  In cases where remediable deficiencies are discovered in the BCM programmes undertaken, the candidate shall audit relevant courses at the undergraduate level, or go through the PGDM programme.

 

B.  FACULTY OF EDUCATION (FULL-TIME, PART-TIME AND SANDWICH)

M.Ed and Ph.D Programmes on Full-Time and Part-Time basis; M.Ed Sandwich (Long Vacation) programme. All Education Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale. All Ph.D

candidates are expected to attend a pre-admission oral interview, at which they are required to defend their written proposals. All Masters candidates must have a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.

 

 

11. DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM STUDIES AND

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

Both the Full-Time and Part-Time (Ph.D & M.Ed) and Sandwich (Long Vacation) M.Ed Programmes have the following areas:

Requirements for M.Ed Programme

The following categories of candidates may be admitted on application into the Programme:

(i)  Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University who have obtained approved Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Education with at least a CGPA of3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.

(ii) Candidates who did not major in Adult Education but obtained at least 2nd

Class Honours Degree or above and with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 in the

Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Such candidates would be required to do some remedial courses as prescribed in the handbook.

 

16.  DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN KINETICS AND HEALTH EDUCATION

Both the Full-Time and Part-Time (Ph.D & M.Sc (Ed) and Sandwich (Long Vacation) M.Sc (Ed) Programmes have the following areas:

(A)  M.Sc (Ed) Human Kinetics

Areas of Specialization

        (a)   Physiology of Exercise

        (b)   Sports Administration and Marketing

        (c)   Sport Psychology

        (d)   Sociology of Sport

         (e)   Rehabilitation Therapy           

Requirements

(i)  Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). Preferably holders of Second Class Honours Degree from a recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.

 

(ii)   Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Science Education

after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education (this category of candidates may be required to take some additional courses in Human Kinetics and related courses as may be prescribed by the Department).

(iii)  An Upper Credit in Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

(B) M.Sc (Ed) Health Education

 

Areas of Specialization

         (a)   Community Health Education

         (b)   Occupational Health and Safety Education

         (c)   Environmental Health and Safety Education

 

Requirements

(i)   Candidates must possess Second Class Honours Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent from a recognized University in Health Education or Health and Human Kinetics (Integrated Major) 

(ii)   A Degree in Medicine or appropriate Medical Sciences in Nursing or Advanced Graduate Diploma in Health Education (AGDHE), Pharmacy, Dentistry and other Health and Environmental related disciplines.

(iii)   Candidates with a Second Class Honours Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 in related discipline after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Health Education or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). Such candidates may be required to take additional courses in Human Kinetics and Health Education as may be prescribed by the Department.

(C)  Ph.D in the following areas:

       (i)   Sports Management

       (ii)  Psychology and Sociology of Sports

       (iii) Sports Marketing

       (iv) Community Health Education

       (v)   Environmental Health and Safety Education

       (vi)  Occupational Health and Safety Education

 

Requirements

Candidates must possess either an M.Ed Degree in Human Kinetics and Health Education or other relevant Discipline in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.

 

17.  INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION

(a)  CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION STUDIES (CHES)

Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Full-Time and Part-Time programme.

      The programme consists of the following courses:

      (a)    History and Philosophy of Education

      (b)    Educational Psychology

      (c)    Teaching Method and Instructional Technology

      (d)    Method Course

      (e)    Sociology of Education

      (f)     Educational Administration

      (g)    Curriculum Development

      (h)    Educational Research, Test, Measurement and Evaluation

     (i)     Supervised Practice in Teaching

     (j)     Supervised Project

  

(i)  Requirements -

(a) Candidates who graduated from the Faculty of Education or other disciplines with at least a third class degree with a minimum CGPA of 1.50 are eligible to apply.

(b) HND Upper Credit and its equivalent from recognized Polytechnics.

 

(ii) Duration

  1. Full-Time: The Programme will last for a minimum of 12 calendar months and maximum of 24 calendar months. 
  2. Part-Time: The programme which will run for three terms is for a minimum of one year and maximum of two years.

 

C.  FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

All Social Sciences Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale except Economics and Demography and Population Studies in the Department of Sociology which require a minimum CGPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale.

 

18.  DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

(i)Postgraduate Diploma in Economics

(ii)    M.Sc, Ph.D in Economics in the following areas:

Requirements for Ph.D Economics:

Candidates must have an M.Sc Degree in Economics in addition to the other faculty requirements with a CGPA of 4.00 and above.

 

19.  DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL

MANAGEMENT

(i)   PGD Geography and Environmental Management (PGDGEM)

(ii)  M.Sc, Ph.D in Geography and Environment Management in the following      areas:

      (a)  Rural Land Use and Rural Development

      (b)  Urban Geography

      (c)  Transport Geography

      (d)  Regional Development Planning

      (e)   Biogeography

      (f)   Climatology

      (g)  Geomorphology

      (h)  Environmental Management

      (i)  Watershed and Wetlands Management (M.Sc only)

      (j)  Geographic Information System (GIS) (M.Sc only)

      (k) Cartography (M.Sc only)

      (l)  Disaster Risk Management (Ph.D only)

 

O’Level Requirements

  1. Geography component (Rural land use and Rural Development, urban Geography, Transport, Regional Development Planning, Biogeography, Climatology and Geomorphology), candidates must have credit passes in Geography, English Language, Mathematics and any other two Art or Science subjects.
  2. Environmental Management:  Candidates must have credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, plus any other three Art or science subjects.
  3. Disaster Risk Management:  Same as item (b) above.

 

Requirements for M.Sc in Geographic Information System (GIS):

Admission to the M.Sc Degree programme in GIS is open to graduates of this University and other approved universities recognized by Senate with a

 

minimum of second class Bachelor’s in Science, Social Medicine, Agriculture and Forestry, Environmental Science, Social Sciences and Engineering etc. Work experience in scientific management and policy-oriented establishments will be an added advantage.

Requirements for M.Sc in Watershed and Wetlands Management:

Admission to the M.Sc Degree programme in Watershed and Wetlands Management is open to graduates of this University and other approved universities recognized by Senate. They must either hold the Postgraduate Diploma in Geography and Environmental Management with a CGPA of 3.50 and above or a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Civil, Water and Environmental Engineering, Geological Sciences, Environmental Resource Management, Agriculture and Forestry or Environmental Science with a minimum of second class honours and minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale. Work experience in scientific, management and other related establishments will be an added advantage.

Requirements for Master of Science in Geography and Environmental Management:  Cartography option:

To be eligible for admission into the Professional Masters (PM) programme, applicants should have the following:

(a) At least five (5) O’Level credit passes including English Language and Mathematics.

(b)   A good Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Cartography or other cognate disciplines in Geoinformatics with a minimum of second class lower Degree and a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale, from an approved university with its programme fully accredited.

(c) Candidates with a Postgraduate Diploma Degree in Geography, Cartography, GIS or from a cognate discipline awarded by a recognized institution must have not less than 1.50 CGPA.

(d)   Candidates with Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mapping and Surveying disciplines such as Cartography, Remote Sensing, Land Surveying or Geoinformatics, etc, must have a minimum of Upper Credit and a Postgraduate Diploma Degree in relevant areas.

 

Requirements for Ph.D in Environmental Management:

Admission to the Ph.D Degree programme is open to graduates of this University who have attained a specific level of performance in the M.Sc programme in GIS, Geography and Environmental Management and related disciplines of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.50 in a 5-point scale.

 

Requirements for Ph.D in Disaster Risk Management:

Admission to the Ph.D Degree programme in Disaster Risk Management is open to graduates of this University who have attained a specific level of performance in the M.Sc programme in Disaster Risk Management, Geography and Environmental Management and related disciplines of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.

Requirements for M.Sc in Crop Production:

Candidates seeking admission into the programme must:

  • Have a Bachelor of Agriculture or a Bachelor of Science in Crop Science, Horticulture, Agronomy and Forestry or in related fields from a recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or 2.40 on a 4-point scale.
  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the agricultural disciplines listed above with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or Bachelor’s Degree in a related science with a CGPA of 3.00 plus a PGD in Crop and Soil Science with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 or HND (Upper Credit) in a relevant agricultural discipline. Fulfill the general requirements as contained in the brochure of the School of Graduate Studies.

Requirements for Ph.D in Crop Production:

  • Hold M.Agric or M.Sc or M.Phil in Agronomy, Crop Physiology, Horticulture/Landscaping, Plant Breeding/Genetics, Crop Protection, Entomology, Nematology, Plant Pathology or Weed Science of an approved University.
  • Passed the masters’ degree in the specialized areas specified with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 2.80 on a 4-point scale.
  • Comply with the general regulations, conditions and policies guiding graduate studies as specified by the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Port Harcourt.

The prospective candidates must possess at least a second class (Lower Division) Bachelors’ Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.00 (on a 5-point scale) in Forestry/Forest Resources Management/Wood Science, Wildlife Management or Agriculture, and other equivalent fields obtained from any University recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt. Candidates must have full Ordinary Level Certificate with a credit

level pass in English Language. In exceptional cases, candidates with Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental/Biological Science or related field who meet the above stated requirements, but have minimal deficiencies in Forestry, may be admitted. Requirements for M.Sc in Immunology Programmes:

A minimum of five O’level credit passes including English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

The course is open to graduates of Medicine, Dentistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Nursing, Biochemistry, Molecular-Biology, Microbiology, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine and Zoology. Candidates who hold a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale in any of the above-mentioned courses, from the University of Port Harcourt or other recognized Universities shall be eligible for admission into the programme (except for the Medical, Dental and Pharmacy graduates whose Degrees are unclassified).

 

G.  FACULTY OF CLINICAL SCIENCES

 

42. M.Sc Sports Medicine

(a)   For medically qualified persons with MB.BS, B.Ch or a fellowship in any

       Medical discipline.

(b)   The duration of Course is 18 – 36 months.

The Course work will be taught in two semesters of 12 months while the

student will spend the remaining 6 months in a training attachment and a

project work.

Admission Requirements:

The Programmes will be open to candidates who possess a first Degree in Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing and other relevant courses allied to Medicine. In addition candidates must have at least three years post Degree experience and must have completed National Youth Service (NYSC) programme. Candidates for admission into the programme will undergo a selection process and only those who are successful will be admitted into the programme.

To serve the interest and needs of all Medical, Health and allied professions who desire the programme, there is need to simultaneously mount two separate programmes, one for medically qualified graduates and another for non-medically qualified professionals who wish to practice Public Health.

 

Requirements for Master of Public Health Programme:

(a) MBBS or its equivalent, with a minimum of three years post qualification experience.

(b) Candidates are also required to pass the qualifying examination.

Requirements for MSc Public Health Programme:

(a) B.Sc Honours in a health-related discipline with a minimum of Second

Such candidates may be required to take remedial undergraduate courses in Pharmacognosy as recommended by the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee.

Requirements for Ph.D

(i) Candidates who possess the M.Pharm Degree in Pharmacognosy of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized Universities, with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale. However candidates with CGPA of 3.00 in their M.Pharm or M.Sc Programmes in the Pharmacognosy or related disciplines may be considered for admission. Such candidates shall be required to take recommended 700 level/remedial courses which they must pass at an average score of 60% in the first year.

(ii) Candidates with M.Sc/M.Pharm Degree (minimum CGPA of 3.50); M.Phil Degrees in Pharmacognosy, Ethnomedicine, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Botany of the University of Port Harcourt or other approved Universities. (i)    A Degree in Sports Education or related courses with a minimum of 3rd          Class (Honours) Degree and at least 1.50 CGPA. 

(ii)    Experience in Sports matters will be an advantage

 

Duration

The programme is designed to last for two semesters of full time course work.

(ii) Master of Science (M.Sc) in Sports Science with options in:

  1. Sports Nutrition
  2. Exercise Science
  3. Fitness and Recreational Management
  4. Sports Coaching and Administration
  5. Sports Broadcasting/Journalism

 

Admission Requirements for M.Sc Programme in Sports Science

(a) Candidates must have five credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics at the O’Level or its equivalent.

(b) Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower and with a CGPA of 3.00 or above on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.

(c)   A Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum of 3.50 in Sports Science or related discipline, including Postgraduate Diploma in Basic Medical Sciences (Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology) and Human Kinetics and Health Education from a recognized University.

K. FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

All Engineering Ph.D programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.  Candidates would be required to attend an interview before admission and registration for the programme, and will be required to write a qualifying examination.

 

Requirements for Faculty of Engineering

1. PGD Programmes:  Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 3rd Class Honours in his/her choice of discipline or a minimum of

22 in any other related Engineering discipline.

2.   M.Eng Programmes:   Candidates must possess either a Bachelor’s Degree with minimum of Second Class Honours in the relevant Discipline, with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or PGD in the relevant areas with minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.

 

49. Master of Engineering Management (MEM) in the following areas:

(a)   Chemical Engineering

Requirements:

Requirements for PGDME:

Candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma in Mechanical Engineering must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from a reputable university with a minimum of Third Class Honours for graduates of mechanical or mechatronics engineering, or a minimum of second class lower division for graduates of other related engineering fields such as marine engineering, mining engineering, agricultural engineering or chemical engineering.

 

(ii)  Master of Engineering (M.Eng) in the following areas:

            (a)   Energy and Thermofluid Engineering  

            (b)   Industrial & Systems Engineering

            (c)   Mechanical & Tribological Systems Engineering

            (d)   Mechatronic Engineering

            (e)   Production & Maintenance Engineering

 Requirements for M.Eng Admission:

Candidates for the M.Eng in Mechanical Engineering must possess a good Bachelor’s Degree (B.Eng) or an acceptable Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 (or 3.50 for PGD holders). Bachelor’s Degree holders from other related fields of engineering (such as Marine Engineering, Mining Engineering, Agricultural Engineering

or Chemical Engineering) with a minimum of second class upper division may also be considered, but they must be prepared to remedy the deficiencies by taking the recommended Department’s undergraduate and/or Postgraduate Diploma courses in addition

 

(iii)   Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering in the following areas:

(a)    Applied Mechanics and Design

(b)    Engineering Materials Design

(c)    Production/Industrial Engineering

(d)    Thermofluid Engineering

 

Requirements for Ph.D Admission:

To be admitted into the Ph.D Degree programme in Mechanical Engineering, each candidate must fulfil the following requirements:

(i)  Satisfy the general University requirements for admission into the programme.

(ii) Possess a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or a minimum percentage score of 60% obtained from a recognized University.

(iii) Provide a copy of the Master’s Degree transcript and the details of the referees on his/her academic work and

(d)Be successful (score at least 60%) in a proposal presentation/admission screening interview to be organized by the Department.

O’Level Admission Requirements:

Candidates must possess at least a credit pass in five subjects including Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology to be qualified for admission into M.Eng Programme in Civil Engineering.

Admission Requirements for Master of Engineering (M.Eng)

To be admitted into any of the Specializations in the M.Eng (Civil Engineering) Degree Programme, a candidate must possess a minimum of second class (Honours) Degree in Civil Engineering, with a minimum CGPA above 3.00 on a 5-point scale obtained from the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University.  Preference will be given to those with a CGPA of 3.50 and above (corresponding to second class Honours Upper Division or First Class).

Admission Requirements for Ph.D

Candidates for Admission into Ph.D Civil Engineering Programme must possess the Master of Engineering or Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University with at least a CGPA) of 3.50 on a 5-point scale (corresponding to an average score of a B grade). 

 

55.    DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC

         ENGINEERING

 

(i)  M.Eng. in Electrical/Electronic Engineering in the following areas:

(a)    Power System and Machines

(b)    Electronics and Telecommunications

 

(ii)  Ph.D in Electrical Engineering and Technology in the following areas:

  1.  Power Systems Engineering
  2. Electrical Machines
  3. Power Electronics and Drives
  4. Instrumentation and Control

 

Admission Requirements for M.Eng Programme:

Candidates must possess a minimum of Second Class Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.

 

Admission Requirements for Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Programme:

Candidates must possess a minimum of Second Class Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with at least a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.

 

L. FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES

All Management Sciences Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale. All Ph.D candidates are expected to attend a pre-admission oral interview, at which they are REQUIRED to defend their written proposals

All Management Sciences programmes require O’level credit pass in English Language, Mathematics, Economics and two other relevant subjects.

 

(i)     Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in the following areas:

       (a)    Accounting

       (b)    Finance and Banking

       (c)    Management

       (d)    Marketing

Requirements for PGD Programmes:

Candidates must possess at least a Third Class Degree in the field of specialization. Other candidates in related Disciplines must possess at least a

Second Class Honours Degree or a Third Class. For HND holders, a minimum of upper credit is acceptable in the related discipline.

 

(ii)   Master of Business Administration (MBA) in the following areas:

        (a)    Accounting

        (b)    Finance and Banking

        (c)    Management

        (d)    Marketing

 

Requirements for MBA Programmes:

Candidates must have B.Sc Degree in the field of specialization with a minimum CGPA of 3.00on a 5-point scale in (Accounting, Finance and Banking, Management, Marketing). Others from related fields must possess at least a 3.50 on a 5-point scale from PGD programmes.

 

(iii) Master of Science (M.Sc) in the following areas:

 

        (a)    Accounting

        (b)    Finance and Banking

        (c)    Management

        (d)    Marketing

 

Requirements for MSc Programmes:

Candidates with a minimum of Second Class B.Sc Degree in the field of specialization with minimum CGPA of 3.00on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.

Holders of  MBA in Mgt Sciences with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.

 

56.   DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND BANKING

(iv) Master of Finance & Banking / ACIB Linkage Programme (MFB/ACIB):

On completion, a graduate will earn the Master of finance & Banking (MFB) Degree from the University of Port Harcourt and an award of an Associateship Certificate by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).

Admission Requirements:

(i) O’Level requirements include a credit pass in English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects as approved by the University of Port Harcourt.

(ii)     A minimum of Second Class Honours Degree in Finance & Banking with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale, 2.50 on a 4-point scale or 50% on an average scale system.

(iii)   HND in Finance & Banking or other related business areas including Marketing, Insurance, Accounting, Management/Business Administration and an additional PGD in Finance & Banking with at least a CGPA of 3.50.

 

57.   Department of Hospitality Management and Tourism:

 

Admission Requirements for PGD Programme:

Candidates seeking admission for Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management must have any of the following qualifications from a recognized institution;

 

(i)    Five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics and any two      from Commerce/Economics, Geography, Biology/Agricultural Science,   Catering, Tourism and Nutrition at the ‘O’ level;

(ii)  Relevant Bachelor’s Degrees not lower than Third Class Division from recognized Universities;

(iii)   Higher National Diploma at minimum of Lower Credit level;

(iv)   Relevant professional qualifications will be added advantage.

 

MSC in Hospitality Management and Tourism:

(a)    Tourism and Leisure Studies

(b)    Hospitality and Event Management

 

Admission Requirements:

Candidates seeking admission for Masters in tourism and Hospitality Management must have any of the following qualifications from recognized institutions:

 

(i)   Five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any two from, Commerce, Geography, Biology/Agricultural Science, Catering, tourism and Nutrition at the ‘O’ level;

(ii)  Bachelor’s Degrees with a minimum of Second class Lower with a CGPA of 3.00 in a 5-point scale or its equivalent in Tourism and/or Hospitality Management may be considered;

(iii) A Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum of 3.50 in Tourism and/or Hospitality Management or related discipline from a recognized university.

 

 

(v)  Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in the following areas:

       (a)  Accounting

       (b)  Finance and Banking

       (c)  Management

       (d)  Marketing

 

Requirements for Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) Programme:

Candidates for the DBA programme must possess an MBA or M.Sc in Accounting, Finance and Banking, Management, and Marketing or in an acceptable and closely related area/discipline.  The Master’s programme must have had a Dissertation/Research component. 

Candidates are required to have had a minimum of 3.50 on a 5- point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale in their master’s programme.

Working experience of two years attained in a middle management position in the corporate world or in an alternative relevant employment will be an added advantage. 

 

The final selection of candidates for the DBA programme shall be based on the candidate’s performance at an interview to be conducted by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee.

 

(v)   Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:

        (a)    Accounting

        (b)    Finance and Banking

        (c)    Management

        (d)    Marketing

 

Requirements for Ph.D Programmes:

Candidates must have M.Sc in the field of specialization (Accounting, Finance and Banking, Management, Marketing) in addition to the other faculty requirements.

 

 

DURATION OF GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

A. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)     

The Programme is to run on a Full-Time basis to last for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months and two consecutive long vacation of eight (8) weeks each for sandwich programme.

B.  MBA Programme

Full-Time: Minimum of 24 Calendar Months and Maximum of 36 Calendar Months while Part-Time is a Minimum of 36 Calendar Months and a Maximum of 48 Calendar Months.

 

C.  MD and MS Programmes

The Programmes will last for at least 24 Calendar Months.

 

D.  Ph.D Programmes

Full-Time candidates will be required to spend a minimum of 24 calendar

months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.

Part-Time candidates will be required to spend a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 84 calendar months.

 

E.  DBA Programme

Full-time candidates shall be required to spend a minimum of three (3) years and a maximum of five (5) years from the date of first registration.

 

Part-time candidates will be required to spend a minimum of five (5) years and a maximum of seven (7) years.

 

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

O/LEVEL

All candidates require a credit pass in English Language and Mathematics for all the courses. However, candidates who obtained their O’Level Certificates before 2012 without a credit pass in Mathematics and wish to gain admission into the following Departments are eligible to apply:

 

Faculty of Humanities

All the Departments in the Faculty of Humanities.

 

Faculty of Education

All the Departments in the Faculty of Education.

 

Faculty of Social Sciences

All the Departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences except the Department of Economics.

 

ALL PGD PROGRAMMES

The minimum requirement for the Postgraduate Diploma Programmes is a Bachelor’s Degree in the related disciplines. Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree or Third Class in the related Discipline. For HND holders a minimum of Upper Credit is acceptable in the relevant Departments.

 

PGDC

For the Postgraduate Diploma in Chemistry (PGDC) Programme, candidates with Third Class need not apply.

 

MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMMES

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree of the University of Port Harcourt or any recognized University, in the relevant course with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.

 

Candidates for the Master’s in Education must have obtained a first Degree in another field and in addition a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) with at least an Upper Credit classification. Candidates for the MBA Programme must possess a strong quantitative background. Candidates with PGD must have a CGPA of 3.50 to register for Master’s Degree in the relevant field

 

Ph.D PROGRAMMES

Generally, for the Ph.D Programmes, candidates should have a Master’s Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 or 4.00 depending on the Department or its equivalent grade in the relevant discipline at the Master’s level. Admission will be based on interview performance. Ph.D involves course work and qualifying examination.

 

 

MD/MS PROGRAMME

(A)   Candidates must either be graduates of Medicine (MBBS) of the University of Port Harcourt for not less than five (5) years or confirmed and experienced academic staff of the University with Medical Degree of recognized University.

 

(B)   In addition to the above, candidates must possess either a recognized professional qualification at the fellowship level or at least an M.Sc Degree of a recognized University, after the MBBS Degree.

Application Fee of Fifteen Thousand Naira (N15,000.00) should be paid online at any of the following Banks: U&C Microfinance Bank, UBA, Fidelity Bank, Access Bank, Eco Bank, First Bank and Sterling Bank.
