COVID-19 GUIDELINES/PROTOCOL FOR THE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY

PREAMBLE

These guidelines for the resumption of academic activities in the University of Port Harcourt are in accordance with the public health Guidance for Safe School Re-opening in Nigeria as published by NCDC.

 

A)   GENERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES

1.         Security personnel, clerical staff and cleaners will be trained on the handling of infrared thermometers, cleaning, proper waste management, enforcement of face mask wearing and hand hygiene.

2.         The University environment will be sanitized before resumption and decontaminated as frequently as necessary. Proper cleaning, disinfecting and waste management will be maintained at all times.

3.          Staff, students’ and other members of the University community must wear face mask that should cover the nose and mouth when in the company of other people.

4.         Everybody should subject themselves to temperature checks at every point of entry into any of the campuses, classrooms or halls of residence.

5.         Everybody is required to practice hand hygiene, i.e. washing of hands under running water for 20 seconds and / or use hand sanitizers containing at least 70% alcohol

a)         Before leaving home / hostel

b)         On arrival at school

c)         After touching door handles / knobs and other surfaces

d)         Before eating

e)         Before leaving school

6.         The mouth and nose should be covered with tissue when coughing or sneezing and the tissue disposed of immediately into a covered bin. In the absence of a tissue, cough or sneeze into the flexed elbow.

7.        Everybody must maintain a physical distance of 2 metres from others in public spaces.

8.         Those who have clinical features of COVID-19, i.e. fever, cough, difficulty in breathing and generalized body pains will be taken to the OB Lulu Briggs Health Centre for further evaluation and isolation if necessary. Those who test positive to COVID-19 will be taken to the COVID-19 Treatment Centre located at the International Students’ Centre.

9.         Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

10.       Avoid close contact with people who are unwell.

11.       There shall be no squatting in the hostels.

 

B)  SOCIAL GATHERINGS, ASSEMBLIES AND OTHER MEETINGS

1.         Group exercises such as aerobics is suspended.

2.         Gathering of students’ association, cultural groups and any other student organisations is suspended till further notice.

3.         Physical distancing within classrooms and the use of outdoor space should be encouraged.

4.         Demonstration and protest marches of any kind is suspended for now until further notice. Instead, representatives of not more than ten (10) persons should be sent to the management.

 

C)  MISCELLANEOUS

1.         The OB Lulu Briggs Health Centre, Youth Friendly Centre and the COVID-19 Steering Committee will periodically undertake awareness campaigns on campus.

2.         OB LULU Briggs Health Centre in conjunction with UPTH will ensure contact tracing, testing and management of suspected persons.

3.         Confirmed COVID-19 patients will be managed at the COVID-19 Treatment Centre of the University.
