Awi-Waadu's Report Card At SSLT By Obinna Nwodim

Immediate past Dean of the School of Science Laboratory Technology (SSLT), Professor Grace Awi-Waadu, has bowed out with presentation of her four-year score card.

Professor Awi-Waadu described her tenure as challenging and interesting, adding that during the period, the School attained full programme accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

Her tenure also recorded increased staff strength, harvest of five first class graduates, as well as excelling the maiden University Debate Competition. She stated that other milestones recorded included a well-equipped laboratory, a functional library, as well as a vibrant staff development programme.

Professor Awi-Waadu, who assumed office on March 14, 2014, disclosed that she built on the solid foundation laid by her predecessor, Professor Anthony Ataga, as well as a vibrant team she met on ground. The former Dean further disclosed that she ensured enhanced visibility of the SLT Programme, with over 1,200 students in the full-time degree programme.

Her tenure also witnessed the induction of three sets of licensed technologists, recognition of SSLT as a centre of excellence by the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology for the conduct of professional examinations. “Our SLT programme was adopted as a model by other Nigerian universities. Our students were involved in numerous technological inventions and innovations that could advance local technology development,” the Dean said. She expressed hope that the School would become a full-fledged Faculty of Science Laboratory Technology.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Regina Ogali, stressed the need for staff to recognise the need for accountability and responsibility in the line of duty. She praised Professor Awi-Waadu for her sense of duty and successful duty tour, adding that Management recognised and appreciated the imprint of the former Dean. Professor Ogali advised her successor to emulate the footsteps of Professor Awi-Waadu by striving harder to add value to the School.

Highlight of the event were goodwill messages from former Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Administration), Professor Ethelbert Nduka, immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Professor Chijioke Nwauche, former Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Professor Datonye Dapper, Dean of the Faculty Management, Professor Barisua Nwinee, as well as Dean, Faculty of Science, Professor Gordon Obute, who was represented by the Associate Dean, Dr. Kaine Okorosaye-Orubite.
