Nwauche Bows Out In A Blaze Of Research Glory By Otikor Samuel

Following the expiration of his two-year tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Professor Chijioke Nwauche has bowed out, leaving behind an impressive research record that would serve as a reference model.
In his Valedictory Address which was presented at an Extraordinary Faculty Board Meeting which held at the new Faculty of Basic Studies Complex, on Monday, March 19, 2018, a copy of which was made available to a Correspondent of UniPort News, Professor Nwauche recalled that he assumed office as the 10th Dean of the Faculty on February 26, 2016 with a clear vision to move the Faculty to a higher pedestal.
“When I assumed office, I set out to re-engineer our Faculty to become a research-driven Faculty and I am glad that we recorded some verifiable landmark results. The process started with concerted effort to usher in harmony, team spirit and good neighbourliness amongst members of our research faculty. My tenure also witnessed improvement in staff welfare, increased human and infrastructural capacity development, and quality teaching, learning and research that went on seamlessly in the Faculty,” Professor Nwauche said.
The immediate past Dean disclosed that under his watch, research culture was further deepened with the establishment of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Chair on Malaria Elimination and Phytomedicine Research, the Kenneth Diete Koki Chair of Neurophysiology and the Abiye Obuoforibo Chair of Histochemistry.
Professor Nwauche added that his administration initiated the production of a well-received biannual journal: The Basic Medical Scientist that documents ground-breaking research works in the Faculty and allied disciplines. The erstwhile Dean further disclosed that he achieved the production of the journal by expanding the Faculty's Research and Training Committee which organised periodic research seminars, workshops, trainings and didactic sessions that benefitted the academic staff.
Other major achievements recorded in the Faculty in the past two years included hosting of a five-day international workshop on Human Skeletal Identification by the Department of Human Anatomy between May 30 and June 2, 2017, the 3rd Kenneth Diete Koki Memorial Lecture, the maiden Abiye Obuoforibo Memorial Lecture and the Neuroscience Guest Lecture.
“I must say, that these past two years have been among the most important highlights of my professional career, because they were deeply rewarding in so many ways. As a Faculty, we can all be proud of what we have jointly accomplished over the past two years, sometimes against daunting odds.
“I clearly articulated a vision for the future of the Faculty, a vision founded on the fundamental principles of equity and fairness,” Professor Nwauche said, expressing gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale and Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Christie Mato for their guidance and support. He also thanked the Associate Dean, Dr. Gabriel Oladipo and other staff of the Faculty for offering total support to his administration, appealing that the same support be extended to his successor.
