Mgt Inspects Facilities, As V-C Commissions IITD Power Generating Plant By Otikor Samuel

Management's determination to ensure accelerated completion of ongoing Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Building in the University was re-emphasised on Friday, April 13, 2018, when the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, led Principal Officers and some Senior Officers on an inspection tour of the facility.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the Chinese construction firm handling the project, urging it to complete and hand it over before the new July deadline.

The Vice-Chancellor and his entourage also inspected the proposed National Microbial Type Culture Collection Centre and Laboratories at the UniPort Centre of the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA). The facility tour was rounded up with the commissioning of a 6KVA electricity generating set donated to the Institute of International Trade and Development by the 2015 PhD Class.

Speaking at the CBN building site, Professor Lale described the building as one of the flagship projects on Campus. He commended the Central Bank of Nigeria for donating the multi-billion naira project. He also lauded the team of experts working on the building for doing what he described as quality job that would last.

Professor Lale stressed the need to add a swimming pool to the building and visitors' toilet to the suites to ensure the privacy of guests, expressing the readiness of the University to put the legacy project to good use once it is completed. “I am amazed by what is on ground here. It goes to attest to the fact that if resources are made available, Nigerians can perform wonders. We are very impressed by what has been achieved so far and we cannot wait to put the building into use. However, there are few defects which when corrected will turn this place into a world-class facility,” the Vice-Chancellor observed.

The facility tour was guided by representative of the Project Manager, Mr. Emekoma Chris and Resident Architect, Mr. Godwin Okoronkwo.

Similarly, the Vice-Chancellor has charged the Director of Regional Centre for Bioresources Development and Conservation, Professor Anthony Ataga to transform the Botanical Garden into a centre of attraction for visitors to the University, announcing that new access roads would soon be created at the Permanent Site.

While inspecting the Environmental, Chemical and Molecular Biology Laboratories, including the Bioreactor/AFM Room, Professor Ataga, who is also in charge of the UniPort Office of NABDA, told the Vice-Chancellor that the Centre was capable of generating sufficient funds to sustain its activities if certain instruments were procured and installed.

The tour was rounded-up with the commissioning of a 6KVA electricity generating set donated to the Institute of International Trade and Development in Delta Park by the public-spirited doctoral class. Speaking before the commissioning ceremony, Professor Lale enjoined the doctoral candidates to show more interest in the affairs of their alma mater to ensure that those driven by pecuniary interest do not hijack the Alumni Association.

Director of the IITD, Professor Sylva Kalu, also praised the candidates for making the donation, promising that the programme would be made to meet current trends in the study of global trade. Members of the class present at the ceremony included Barinaaziga Tegbee, Felix Amieyofori and Anthony Egbuche.

On the Vice-Chancellor's entourage were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Regina Ogali, Registrar, Mrs. Dorcas Otto and Acting Bursar, Mrs. Helen Owhonda-Wopara, while others included: Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Barisua Nwinee, Director of Quality Assurance and Quality Control Unit, Professor Ikechukwu Agbagwa, Director of the University of Port Harcourt Business School, Professor Okey Onuchuku and Deputy Registrar (Information), Williams Wodi.
