Gov Wike's Wife Advocates Effective Institutional Governance At NAEAP Confab By Ethel Timi-Johnson

Wife of the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Justice Suzette Wike, has stressed the need for effective institutional governance systems to ensure that educational laws are properly implemented to benefit students and administrators.

Justice Wike made the remark while speaking on the theme of the Conference: Educational Law and Institutional Governance in Nigeria organised by the University of Port Harcourt Chapter of the Nigerian Association for Educational Administration and Planning (NAEAP), which held on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at the Ebitimi Banigo Auditorium, University Park. She posited that reforms in educational laws should reflect accountability in institutional governance to ensure global best practices that would benefit end-users and other stakeholders.

“Educational institutions must be effectively governed otherwise, they will be prone to deterioration. Institutional governance systems must be efficient, responsive, adaptable, transparent, forward-thinking, accountable and show respect for the rule of law. It is argued that mechanisms should be put in place by the law to ensure that institutional governance systems are evaluated according to these standards,” Justice Wike recommended. Welcoming dignitaries and participants to the University, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, described the theme of the conference as very timely, especially at a time educational institutions in Nigeria were in dire need of law and order. “We are hopeful that this important conference would yield fruitful deliberations and outcomes that would assist policy makers to tackle  identified legal loopholes that are frequently ignored in the educational development of Nigeria,” the Vice-Chancellor remarked.

Keynote Speaker, Professor Benjamin Okeke, disclosed that an effective and properly articulated legal framework that would checkmate all traces of individual, governmental, civil or criminal disobedience committed by public officers in complex organisations should be put in place. “Until these outstanding issues are unravelled, the assumed fight and war against corruption and fraud in the country's public service would remain bizarre,” he submitted.

In their separate remarks, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Tamunobelema Orunaboka, who was represented by Dr. Betty Irulor, Head of the Department of Educational Management, Professor Nathaniel Abraham, and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Gospel Kpee, expressed hope that institutional governance in Nigeria would be embedded into the educational laws for the benefits of all stakeholders.

Major highlights of the two-day conference included separate lead paper presentations on the theme of the conference by immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Lawrence Igwe and Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Ibiba Worika. The two-day conference also witnessed parallel and technical sessions on the sub-themes.
