Cameroonian Catholic Varsity Signs Partnership Pact With UniPort By Mercy Adeniji

In a bid to strengthen its programme in Petroleum Engineering and forge regional linkages, the Catholic University of Cameroon (CUoC) in Bamenda, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Port Harcourt. The MoU would enable the partners to explore exchange opportunities and mentorship in outlets in Petroleum Engineering programme for staff and students of the Cameroon-based institution.
Speaking when he received a team from the Catholic University on Tuesday October 16, 2018, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, commended the delegation for seeking to deepen knowledge on the specialised training required by students to be proficient in the complex Petroleum Engineering field. Professor Lale assured the delegation of Management's willingness to expose its faculty and students on global best practice through the emergent partnership.
“I am most excited about this partnership because part of what the university system does is to internationalise programmes as part of the initiative to exchange ideas across boundaries and I am sure we are doing the right thing by initiating this partnership with another institution in Africa,” the Vice-Chancellor told his guests.
In his remarks, the Director of Cooperations at the Catholic University of Cameroon, Mr. Promise Munteh, disclosed that the visit was part of his institution's plan to expand its studies in Petroleum and Chemical Engineering. “Our biggest challenge was to identify a suitable partner institution where our students can practise on the job. We decided that with the experience and expertise of University of Port Harcourt and the established operational structures of the oil and gas sector here, Port Harcourt is the right place to be.
“One of the major areas in which we really want collaboration is in exchange of our students and academics with your University. This is part of our drive to internationalise our programmes which is one of the criteria for global ranking. We need your support and we thank the University Management for its willingness to partner our institution in this critical area of study,” Mr. Munteh stated. The Director of Cooperations was accompanied by Head of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, Professor Egbewatt Nkongho.
Also speaking, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, expressed gratitude to the Catholic University team for its desire to partner UniPort, commending both institutions on the collaboration and drive towards internationalising their programmes. Professor Fawehinmi hoped that the partnership would be sustained for a long time as part of the move to bring African academics together.
Speaking on the side line, Director of the Exchange and Linkages Programmes Unit (ELPU), Professor Iheanacho Akakuru, commended the team for seeking partnership with an established institution in Petroleum Engineering studies. “It is part of our objective to engage in cross-border research that would benefit our students and faculty. We hope to renew the MoU every five years and also extend it to cover other areas of mutual cooperation,” Professor Akakuru disclosed.
Also, present were Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Franklin Chukuma, Director of Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS), Professor Dulu Appah, and Centre Leader of the World Bank Africa Centre of Excellence in Oilfield Chemicals Research (ACE-CEFOR), Professor Ogbonna Joel.
