AEB Student Wins NIMASA Essay Competition

A second year Student of the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, Miss Lesi Mwara, was among 10 students from Nigerian universities who won an essay competition on Empowering Women in Maritime Community under the auspices of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). The competition was organised to mark the 2019 World Maritime Day celebration.

Speaking with a Correspondent of UniPort News on her arrival from the award-giving ceremony which took place in Lagos on Thursday, September 26, 2019, Miss Mwara described her experience at the event as very fulfilling. She was the only student from Rivers State who won the competition.

“As the Assistant Course Representative in my Department, my Lecturer, Dr Numbere Aroloye, gave me the flyer for the competition to announce to my course mates through our WhatsApp page. I posted it and also decided to apply for the competition which was restricted to first and second year students. A week later, I received a response that I was one of the 10 winners out of over 5,000 applicants,” she recounted.

The award recipient added that the event afforded her an opportunity to interact with the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Director-General of the NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside, and Minister of State for Transportation, Ms Gbemisola Saraki.
