Uniport Produces Face Mask, Hand Sanitisers To Curb COVID-19

Efforts aimed at stemming the rising cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Department of Fine Arts and Design in the Faculty of Humanities, has produced customised face mask for staff and students of the University of Port Harcourt. The face masks produced from high quality fabric was designated with the logo of University of Port Harcourt to distinguish them from others in the market.

Receiving the product from a delegation led by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Professor Femi Shaka, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, expressed satisfaction for the renewed commitment of the Department of Fine Arts and Design to academic excellence, in place of the era of unending crises. He thanked immediate past Head of Department, Professor Florence Nduka for stabilising the Department and setting it on a new path of progress. “This is what we expect from the Department of Fine Arts and Design, not settling unnecessary rivalries and wars amongst staff in different camps,” the Vice Chancellor said.

Professor Lale recalled that the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences had produced customised hand sanitizer for the University community, adding that with the production of face mask, the University was making frantic effort to curb the spread of the virus in the community.

Others who spoke during the presentation of the item included the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Regina Ogali, Registrar, Mrs Dorcas Otto and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Professor Femi Shaka.

In her speech, the Acting Head of Department, Dr Pamela Cyril-Egwara, said the students availed themselves the opportunity of the shutdown to produce the mask as a contribution to stem the rising cases of the pandemic in the State. Dr Cyril-Egwara praised Professor Nduka on her adult leadership of the Department and for facilitating the process of presenting the face mask to the University Management. She also thanked the Head of Textile and Fashion Section, Professor Chinedu Chukueggu and students who participated in the production.
