RSG HANDS OVER NEW CONVOCATION ARENA SITE TO CONTRACTOR

The Rivers State Government has finally handed over the site for the construction of a new Convocation Arena at the University of Port Harcourt to the Contractor, TELIOS Group, which was described as a responsible firm. Special Adviser on Projects to the Governor and Head of the Bureau of Special Projects, D. A. Kelly-George, who performed the handover ceremony on behalf of Governor Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike, assured the Management of the University that the contractor would comply with all the specifications enshrined in the project. The handover ceremony took place behind the existing Convocation Arena at the University Park on Friday, May 15, 2020.

Mr George-Kelly disclosed that the contractor has already been issued with a Letter of Engagement, adding that the project was valued at N3.9 billion. “We are confident that TELIOS Group will deliver a quality project with attention to details; and we do not expect them to cut corners,” the Special Adviser promised.

A visibly delighted Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, expressed gratitude to Governor Wike for donating the project and finally mobilising the contractor to site. “Governor Wike has delivered on his promise and we are happy that construction work has finally commenced on the new Convocation Arena, which is a legacy project from a distinguished alumnus of the University. Although it would no longer be completed during my tenure, I shall still share in the joy of having laid the foundation stone for this landmark project. Our Physical Planning and Development Unit will closely monitor this project to ensure quality job delivery,” Professor Lale said at the event.

In his remarks, a representative of TELIOS Group, Mr Emmanuel Adaria, promised that his firm would keep its side of the bargain. He described his company as stakeholders beyond mere construction of the project. Mr Adaria promised to deliver the project within the contract window, adding that the firm would cooperate with all stakeholders to deliver on its mandate. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Regina Ogali and Principal Partner of PACS Associates (the consultants), Mr Esoetok Etteh, took turns to speak on aspects of the project, with the DVC urging the contractor to deliver on time to enable Management put the facility into use. All the Principal Officers were present at the site handover ceremony.

When completed, the new Convocation Arena would sit fifteen thousand persons with nine offices. When not in use for Convocation Ceremonies, the facility would be partitioned into six lecture theatres with a minimum of one thousand capacity each, making it the most modern and technology-compliant Convocation Arena in any Nigerian university.
