NPDC To Partner UniPort On Infrastructural Dev

More cheering news came the way of the University, when a high-powered delegation from the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Development Corporation (NNPC), disclosed plans to sponsor a legacy project in the University.

The proposed intervention is expected in the provision of infrastructure that would aid teaching and learning in the University of Port Harcourt. The intervention is in line with the corporate social responsibility of the Group which currently operates in the Niger Delta states of Edo, Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Rivers. The NPDC was established in 1988.

Addressing Principal Officers of the University at the Vice Chancellor’s Committee Room on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, the Manager in charge of Community Relations Department, Dahiru Abubakar, said the choice of the University was informed by the fact that the Group operates OML 11 in Rivers State, while some of its personnel are graduates of the University.

“We are here to partner the University in infrastructural development. Our Managing Director, Engineer Mansur Sambo, directed us to ascertain some pressing areas of need that NPDC would consider for sponsorship in the University as legacy projects that would be impactful and outlive all of us. To guide the University, we wish to advise that you make a list of five projects in order of priority in addition to cost and justification,” the CRD Manager disclosed, adding that his company caters to the needs of 250 oil and gas communities within its operational areas.

Responding, a visibly enthused Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Regina Ogali, who currently oversees the affairs of the University, showered praises on NPDC for proposing the intervention without waiting to be prompted. “It gladdens our heart when we receive offers of intervention in the infrastructural and academic development of the University. This is because we need more of such partnerships to advance the University. In other parts of the world, public-spirited individuals and groups make major endowments that advance research and innovations in universities. We are very happy to be included on your list of possible recipients of legacy projects and wish to pledge that we will promptly comply with your request to forward a list of our priority projects,” she said.

Speeches were made by the Registrar, Mrs Dorcas Otto and a member of the entourage, Dr Nnaeto Orazulike. Other NPDC staff who attended the event included Nnaemeka Egerue, Noble Imabibo, Tafida Aminu, Ibrahim Mohammed, Oghale Damiete, Ashata Mohammed and Monday Inene. Also in attendance were the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Ogbonna Joel and Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Planning and Development, Mr Michael Ubom.
