We Don’t Award First Class In Error - VC

First Class StudentsVice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ajienka, has commended the 16 Graduates who made First Class (Honours), noting that it was a reward for their consistent hard work and sacrifices in their studies.

Professor Ajienka made the commendation during the Vice-Chancellor’s Dinner organized in honour of the Graduates as part of activities that marked the 27th Convocation Ceremony of the University. “While we are celebrating excellence, we are also encouraging you to be the best at all times as society expects so much from you.  You must defend your degrees and make the University proud”, he advised.

Stressing that First Class Honours Degrees are not awarded in error, the Vice-Chancellor said that the quality of degrees awarded to students is evident in the excellent scholarship they would exhibit in higher academic programmes, as well as outstanding industry performances by Alumni  of the University, both in and outside the Country. Professor Ajienka assured the Graduates that the University will continue to monitor their progress, advising them to also join in the development of their Alma Mater by joining the Alumni Association.

Registrar, Mrs Matilda Nnodim, who congratulated the Graduates for their excellent academic performances, urged them not to bury their talents. “Break new grounds, remain shining stars wherever you may find yourselves and write your names in gold, but most importantly, do not forget your roots, the Unique UNIPORT”, she advised them.

Commending the University for the bumper Harvest, Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Oleka Udeala, told the Graduates that the only short-cut to success was hard work. He also commended the Lecturers for sacrificing time and energy to turn out such super brains. The Dean challenged them to extend their excellent academic exploits to the larger society where they would face even stiffer competition.

In their contributions, Deputy Vice-Chancellors (Administration, Academic, Research and Development), Professors Ethelbert Nduka, Bernard Efiuvwevwere and Bene Willie-Abbey, Deans, Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, Professors Charles Oyegun and Ebi Awotua-Efebo, urged the First Class Graduates to give back something to their Alma Mater by contributing meaningfully to its development wherever they may find themselves.

Speaking on behalf of the Super Brains, the Best Graduating Student (BGS), Miss Oke Dietake of the Department of Education Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, who commended the teaching staff for their passion, advised her colleagues to leave lasting legacies by contributing to the development of the Country,  noting that the choice of the University for their studies  has provided the necessary platform for the students  not only to actualize their dreams, but also to prepare them for national development.

Describing functionalism as the hallmark of a good education, Dietake further admonished her colleagues to apply the theories and practices learnt in School at solving practical societal challenges for the benefit of mankind. “We must invest in further development of our minds and personality in order not to become obsolete in a globalized knowledge society”, she told them.

The Best Graduating Student who encouraged her successors to remain focused and committed to their studies by shunning distractions such as self-gratification, entertainment and fashion, assured them that the challenges of today would become stepping stones for a greater tomorrow.
Highlight of the Dinner which had in attendance Deans, Heads of Department, Directors and visiting exchange students and their Lecturers from the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, Ghana, was presentation of the pamphlet, Unique UNIPORT 1st Choice Destination for the best brains, produced by the Information, Publications and Public Relations Unit of the University.
