CLE Ends Facility Visit To UniPort

Members of the Facility Verification Team constituted by the Council of Legal Education led by the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Mr. Olarenwaju Onadeko, have ended a one-day facility verification visit to ascertain the readiness of the University to commence the long-awaited Bachelor of Law degree programme this September.

Briefing the Management on the purpose of the exercise, at the Conference Room on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, Mr. Onadeko said the team was in the University on a facility verification visit prior to the final commencement of the LLB programme.

“What we are here to do is the usual exercise we carry out in any university that has been given approval to function by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Our goal is to ensure that the right facilities and requisite manpower have been put in place so that the new Faculty of Law can commence on solid grounds. The difference between accreditation and facility visit is that we want to see what you have on ground before granting you final approval to commence the Law degree programme in this University. At the end of the visit, our impression would be conveyed to the Management of the University. Our objective is to ensure that the University of Port Harcourt Law programme starts on a sound footing,” he said.

Expressing gratitude to the team for the visit, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Professor Anthony Ibe, who stood in for the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, disclosed that the University has its own in-house mechanism for evaluating academic programmes before the arrival of external assessors.

“We want to assure the Council that the authorities of the University are determined to ensure that the law programme kicks off on a sound footing. We can further assure you that we have put the necessary requirements in place to ensure that the verification exercise succeeds. Having waited for too long to commence our Law programme in this University, we have worked so hard to secure the necessary approval from the Council to start and we hope you would expeditiously grant our prayer this time around. Our Law programme is overdue and we are eagerly waiting to hear what else you want us to do to commence the LLB programme in this University. We want to be the best Law Faculty in Nigeria and we are ready to cooperate with the Council to achieve this goal,” Professor Ibe told the Verification Team members.

In his remarks, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Lucky Worika, noted that in the past three years, the Faculty had followed due process in its experimental Diploma programme, preparatory to the introduction of the LLB programme. “We decided to follow the books because we know that in the legal profession, nothing but the best is good enough. We have put in our best and we believe that we have the right staff and facilities on ground to secure approval to start the LLB programme. We did not commence the programme before seeking approval from Council, because we know the implications of such a false start. We are still working hard to ensure that the Faculty of Law attains the highest possible standards,” Professor Worika assured the delegation.

Other members of the team included the Attorney-General of Katsina State, Ahmad El-marzuq, Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ibadan, Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun, Secretary to the Council/Director of Administration, Mrs. Elizabeth Max-Uba, Deputy Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Kano Campus, Dr. Yusuf Dadem, Law Librarian of the Nigerian Law School, Mrs. Olayinka Tuyo and Secretary to the Panel, Ms. Stella-Maris Idele. Adjunct Lecturers in the emergent Law Faculty present at the occasion included Professors Muzan Akpelu and Chima Okene.
