Nursing Science Dept Welcomes New Students

Students admitted into the Department of Nursing Science in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences for the 2016/17 Academic Session were on Friday, April 7, 2017, taken through the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of Nursing training at an Orientation exercise organised for them.
Welcoming the students to the event which held at the Presidential Hall of the Nurses Hostel, Acting Head of Department, Dr. Ijeoma Ihekwaba, commended the Co-ordinator of Student Affairs in the Department, Dr. Faith Diorgu, for initiating the Orientation exercise and the leadership of the University of Port Harcourt Branch of the Nigerian Universities Nursing Students Association (NUNSA) for supporting the idea.
The Acting Head of Department urged the new students to make the best use of their time as the surest way to success. “This is the first time we are gathering to welcome our new students and we want to use the opportunity to sensitise you on what you would experience in the course of the programme,” she said.
In her address, a former Head of Department, Professor Grace Robinson-Bassey noted that: “As you would soon find out, Nursing is for very serious-minded students. Nursing students are jacks of all trade and masters of all. There are many people who already have PhDs in different fields that are desirous of becoming professional Nurses. You can’t be registered for professional examinations if you don’t pass the prescribed courses and if you fail more than two courses, you will be forced to repeat the entire process. Competition is the name of the game.”
On her part, Mrs. Awoala George enlightened the students on their link to the Psychiatric Hospital in Rumuigbo and another health facility at Obuama in Degema Local Government Area as approved training places outside the University Campus. She also enlightened them on approved extra-curricular activities. “Your main business for coming here is academics which you should pursue with all seriousness. Ensure that you read the Students’ Handbook to acquaint yourselves with the rules and regulations governing your conduct and studies,” she advised the students.
Also speaking, Mrs. Elizabeth Oduali said: “Nursing made me to stand out and I walk with my shoulders high,” charging the students to show that they are from good homes by being respectful and obedient to hostel rules. “Make friends with only colleagues who will help you academically and associate with people of integrity,” she admonished them.
Highlight of the programme was the sharing of experience by some senior students, following which the new students were decorated with the Departmental Identity Cards and Armbands.
