HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
This Clinical Department started in 1979 with most other Clinical Departments in College of Health Sciences for the primary purpose of training competent, knowledgeable and resilient young doctors. Others included clinical services, research and training of doctors and paramedical staff.
 
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The Department has concluded and published papers of drug related psychiatric illness, childhood and Acute Reactive Psychosis in sickle cell disease and social psychiatry.
 
Ongoing research under the NUC grant includes prevalence of Dementia in the Niger Delta and pattern of Somatization Disorder in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Suicides and violence among youths in the Niger Delta and Drug Abuse related studies. Most of which have been completed. The current focus of Departmental research is on social and biological psychiatry, including Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Stress Management.
 
The Department has already procured a multimedia projector and a laptop computer and two desktop computers for departmental use, through the DTLC funds. It has also obtained 1 ECT Machine while waiting for another CD ROMS, relevant books and psychometric instrument for its own library, which is currently with full Internet services.
 
OTHER ACTIVITIES
The department has made significant strides in clinical psychiatry, through the rehabilitation programmes, social visits, attraction of external financial assistant for less privileged patients, psychotherapy and counseling.
