Bioresources are different forms of living organisms (plant, animals, microbes) from terrestrial, marine and aquatic ecosystems that have value or potential to generate wealth and improve lives.Bioresources consist of “our total natural biological diversity of the components that have current potentials or economic value”. ThereforeresearchinBioresources, exploitation, development, conservation and preservation continues to attract both national and international attention.As an institution that intends to be part of the solution to the myriads of socio-economic and environmental problems currently confronting our contemporary human race, the University of Port Harcourt is therefore at the vanguard towards the understanding, development and conservation of the Bio-resources of the Niger Delta, the south-south region and indeed, the Nigerian nation, at large.

 

VISION: A worldwide Centre committed to quality academic research, knowledge sharing and transfer for sustainable management and development of our Bioresources.

 

MISSION:A global Centre of excellence that can  contribute to quality knowledge, knowledge sharing and transfer through sound research, scholarship and creativity: Enhancing intellectual Centre that merges theory and practice, promoting responsible and sustainable service, exploitation, development, conservation and management of natural resources for the greater good of our people.

 

AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

 

ØDevelop and create a world class nature park/ global Centre and resort at the University of Port Harcourt that will conduct and co-ordinate research, training in the areas of environmental conservation of our Bioresources to provide sustainable livelihood.

ØIdentify and domesticate the flora and fauna in our own environment based on indigenous knowledge thus promoting their utilization and sustainability.

ØDiscover and develop novel biologically active substances from our Bioresources through research, manufacture and translation into marketable goods  (biotechenterpreneurship)

ØEstablish standard bioresources outfits like Botanic Zoological Gardens, Plant Herbaria,  Mycological/ Microbial Culture Type collection laboratories, Plant Disease Diagnostic/advisory and control Centres,

ØSeed Testing/multiplication/certification/pharmaceutical

ØHerbal Medicinal/Horticultural/Floricultural outfits and training Centresetc, the first of its kind in the Niger Delta, the South and Nigeriaas a whole.

ØProvide and strengthen capacities and facilities for  conferences workshop, lectures,meetings and related activities

ØEstablish community outreach and extension network for natural resources development and conservation.

ØCreate a one-stop spot on campus for procurement, supply, distribution of natural (bio) products and accessories for the University community and its environs and the general public.

ØCreate and widen the revenue base of the university while striving for self-sustainability.

ØThis Centre aims to be the equivalent of Kew Gardens (UK), here in Nigeria.

The Regional Centre for Bioresources Development and conservation has the potential and shall be willing to collaborate and partner with Agro-based, Pharmaceutical industries, manufacturers, researchers, other Universities nationally and internationally.

 

Our various programmes and resources are ready for sponsorship and available for exploitation for our mutual benefits while providing useful goods and services for the University, the community and the nation at large.
