About CCDCD

PHILOSOPHY

The proposed University of Port Harcourt Centre for Children Developmental and Communication Disorders [CCDCD], an educational treatment organization devoted to providing compassionate specialized services for children with developmental disorders to enable them to grow, develop and evolve to their full potential, giving them a happy childhood, life of quality filled with dignity and integrity.  The multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of CCDCD is based on a philosophy that is grounded in the fact that persons with developmental disorders usually have an overlapping set of difficulties, where most children identified with one developmental disorder will have at least some other. CCDCD believes that every child with special needs (delays, disorders or  disabilities ) can benefit from participating in a comprehensive, fully integrated program, in a supportive setting, which emphasizes each child’s unique worth as an individual and as a member of  a community; a community where  every stakeholder in the life of the child, from  family members, educationists, physicians, nurses, care givers to therapist, policy makers, government, lives in constant remembrance/awareness  of  the place/role of early childhood intervention once a child  is identified with special needs. Thus, the philosophy responds to the needs of each child on an individual basis providing for appropriate therapeutic care based on their specific needs. It, therefore, responds to a wide array of needs ranging from socio-psychological disorders, communication disorders, autism spectrum disorders, adjustment disorder, mood disorders, and a variety of childhood social disorders related to abuse and/or neglect.

VISION

CCDCD envisions a collaborative working relationship between the University and Community in helping children with developmental and communication disorders in a welcoming and nurturing environment, get a window of opportunity, through which they will experience social inclusion, find greater independence, gain emotional and behavioral control, fulfill their rights and, actualize their potential and ability, achieve personal growth and be able to develop their talents.

CCDCD foresees a reduction in disability and disability friendly society, where all persons with developmental disorders/disabilities lead fully inclusive and meaningful lives, starting with a happy childhood that lasts for ever. Using experts in children with special needs, CCDCD  will work in partnership with other service providers, related professionals, philanthropists, Non-Government organizations  within and outside the nation for the excellence, dignity,  self-empowerment, respect for the already disabled in enhancing ability in disability by maximizing their potential and creating a positive change in their lives.
