PROF. HAKEEM BABATUNDE FAWEHINMI

Personal Details and Educational Qualifications: Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, a Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology hails from Ondo town and was born on the 29th of September 1969 at Ibadan, Nigeria. He graduated with a B. Med. Sc (Anatomy) in 1989 and an M.B;B.S in 1992 from the University of Port Harcourt. He bagged an M. Sc degree in Medical Anthropology from the University of London in 2003 and an M.D (Doctor of Medicine) in 2008 from UniPort.  

Work Experience / Career Progression: Prof. Fawehinmi has had a rewarding public service and academic career with a wealth of experience in institutional administration. He undertook his pre-registration internship training as a House Officer with the UniPort Teaching Hospital between 1993 and 1994 before proceeding for his one year obligatory National Youth Service Corps as a Medical Officer In-Charge of the Nigerian Air Force Clinic, Ilorin in 1995. He gained employment into UniPort on the 1st of June 1995 as a Lecturer II with the Department of Anatomy and rose through the ranks to become Professor in May 2010.   He was Head of Department of Anatomy, UniPort (2005-2007), Head of Department of Anatomy Niger Delta University (2007-2009), Associate Dean (2010 – 2012) and Dean Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Health Sciences UniPort (2012 – 2014).  He was Visiting Researcher to the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology, University College London in 2006 under the McArthur Foundation Teachers Upgrade Programme. Prof. Fawehinmi has served in many Academic and Administrative Statutory and Ad Hoc Committees and Boards of the University. He is the current Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Port Harcourt.

 

Research and Publications: Prof. Fawehinmi has 55 scholarly publications in reputable Local and International peer reviewed mostly Indexed Journals to his credit, has contributed Chapters to 2 books in Anatomy and has 3 Monographs. He has reviewed 2 books and presented 8 Guest Lectures. He actively participated in 47 conferences within and outside the Country and presented papers in 16. In October, 2014 he delivered the 111th Inaugural Lecture of UniPort titled: “Different Tailors for the Same People; The Same Surgeon for Different People”. He has supervised 5 Ph. D, 15 M. Sc, numerous B. Sc students and is currently supervising 5 Ph. D. Since 2007 he has been External Examiner to the undergraduate and postgraduate Anatomy programmes of 12 Universities and has been on the Visitation Panel of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to some medical schools.

His research focus has been on the Anthropometry of Sickle Cell Anaemia, provision of a Forensic Database to guide Prediction Anthropometry in Nigeria, the development of a Software Tool for Photogrammetric Analysis of facial profile in Nigerians and the Standardization of Negroid Gross Anatomical Models. Some of these innovations have won National Prizes and are in the process of being patented by the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

 

Membership of Professional Bodies: He is the Executive Secretary, Board of Trustees, Sickle Cell Research and Awareness Group (SCRAG) Inc. and was Secretary - General and Member, National Executive Council (1999 – 2000) and later Vice Chairman and Chairman Welfare Committee, Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State Branch (2004 – 2006). He is at present, a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland (FRAI), Fellow, Anatomical Society of Nigeria (FASN), Fellow, Institute of Industrial Administration of Nigeria (FIIA), Member, Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, Member American Anthropological Association and Fellow Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria (FECAN). He was the Editor – in – Chief of the Journal of Anatomical Sciences, the official journal of Anatomical Society of Nigeria and is the Immediate Past President of the Society of Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria.

Awards and Honours: Prof. Fawehinmi has received several Academic and Community Service Awards and Prizes some of which are: Award of Excellence, Students Union Government, UniPort (1997), Life Patron Federated Union of Kalabari Students (FUKS) (1999), Award of Excellence as Outstanding Patron Uniport Collegiate JAYCEES (1999), Scientist of the 21st Century by American Biographical Institute Inc. (2005), Life Patron of the League of Character Club of Nigeria (2005), Distinguished Award of Excellence, Yoruba Students Association (2005), Lecturer of the Year, Anatomical Students Society of Nigeria (2009), Welfare Personality of the Year, Department of Anatomy UniPort (2013), 2016 Award of Excellence, Nigerian medical Association, Rivers State Branch.

 

He is married to Mrs. Hadeezat Omotayo Fawehinmi and they have 5 children, 4 boys and a girl.
