History

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) is a leading public research university located in Choba and Aluu, Rivers State, Nigeria. Established in 1975 as a University College, it was created by the Federal Government of Nigeria to expand access to higher education and meet the growing manpower needs of the Niger Delta region and the nation at large. In 1977, it attained full university status and has since evolved into one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions of learning. The University is uniquely located between the southernmost part of the West African tropical rainforest and the northern fringes of wetlands, swamps, rivers, and mangrove forests that make up the Niger Delta—the hub of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria. This positioning places it within a vibrant environment of rural agrarian and artisanal communities that have been positively impacted by its presence.

From its modest beginnings, the University has grown steadily in size, academic strength, and national relevance, advancing its vision to be ranked among the best universities in Africa, renowned for its teaching, research, creativity, and innovation. The University has continued to pursue academic excellence, the advancement of knowledge, and community service through quality teaching, lifelong learning, social inclusion, the strengthening of civil society, and community-relevant research that addresses the challenges of contemporary society. Over the years, the University of Port Harcourt has expanded its academic structure from a few initial faculties to a comprehensive system comprising multiple faculties, colleges, and specialized schools offering programmes across diverse disciplines. Today, the University boasts a robust academic and administrative structure comprising 2 Colleges, 18 Faculties, 16 Institutes, 4 Schools, 10 Units, and 36 Centres, reflecting its extensive reach across disciplines and its commitment to innovation and specialized knowledge development. Historically, the University has played a significant role in advancing research and development in key sectors such as health sciences, petroleum studies, environmental sciences, and technology. These areas are critical to the socio-economic development of the Niger Delta and Nigeria. The University has identified partnerships with government and industry as a means of advancing knowledge, promoting innovation, and commercializing technology to create wealth, solve societal problems, and ensure sustainability as an entrepreneurial university. Despite early challenges such as limited resources and staffing, the institution demonstrated resilience and growth, establishing research centres and strengthening its academic reputation. Today, the University of Port Harcourt stands as one of the largest universities in Nigeria, with a vibrant student population, a strong faculty base, and a global alumni network. It continues to pursue its mission of advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and contributing meaningfully to society through teaching, research, and community service.
