Chinese Consul General Opens “Window to China” Centre at University of Port Harcourt

The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, Ms Yan Yuqing, on Thursday, 12 June 2025, officially opened the “Window to China” Centre at the University of Port Harcourt, marking a new chapter in Sino-Nigerian educational and cultural cooperation.

Speaking during the ceremony, Ms Yuqing highlighted the strategic importance of the Centre, noting that it would serve as a platform for cultural exchange, academic collaboration, and mutual understanding between China and Nigeria. She emphasised that the initiative would open new frontiers for students, researchers, and academic staff to explore opportunities in education, technology, language, and innovation.

“This Centre is not just a physical space but a gateway to learning, dialogue, and deeper engagement between our two countries,” she stated.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Owunari Georgewill, in his welcome address, described the establishment of the Centre as both timely and visionary. He acknowledged the growing relevance of China in global affairs and stressed the importance of such partnerships in expanding the intellectual and cultural horizons of the university community.

Professor Georgewill also noted that the Centre would enable the exchange of ideas, foster bilateral academic relationships, and expose students to international best practices in research and development.

The event attracted key stakeholders from the university management, representatives from the Chinese Consulate, academic staff, students, and members of the diplomatic community.

The “Window to China” Centre is expected to host exhibitions, language classes, academic seminars, and cultural events that celebrate and deepen the longstanding friendship between Nigeria and China.
