TWO WEEKS RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT (2nd – 13th June, 2025)
The following events took place from Monday 2nd to Friday 13th June, 2025
- An emergency meeting of Senate was held to receive submission from the Chairman, Local Organizing Committee, University of Port Harcourt 50th Anniversary Celebration. The week-long celebration will be climaxed with the combined Convocation Ceremony.
- We received our students who participated at the just concluded National Sports Festival as they presented their medals to the University Management. Two of our students won gold and bronze medals in the Judo competition in various weight categories.
- Window to China corner was launched in the University of Port Harcourt. We received the Chinese Consul General and the Deputy General Manager of CCECC, South-South and South-East with his team for an assessment visit as part of the agreement between the University of Port Harcourt for the establishment of a Window to China project aimed at facilitating higher education opportunities between the University of Port Harcourt and other higher institutions in China.
- Valedictory lecture series marks the end of a career for academics who usually have attained the professorial rank. We participated at the 37th valedictory lecture delivered by Prof. Chris Akani, an accomplished Gynaecologist of global repute. We wish him longevity in good health as he meritoriously bow out of active service from the University of Port Harcourt.
- In our quest for a reinvigorated and professional oriented members of staff, we participated at the 2-day training programme of the Association of Nigerian Professional Administrators (ANUPA) as they organized an International Conference on “Leveraging Technology and Innovation for Excellence”. We paid glowing tribute to them for their intentional and converted effort aimed at repositioning the University workforce for optimum efficiency.
- In keeping with faith to its renewed hope agenda and in fulfilment of the Memorandum of Agreement with University based unions, the Federal Government through the National Universities Commission disbursed monies to respective universities as claims for EAA and EA respectfully. In view of this, we held a meeting with leaders of the unions on campus to set up committees for immediate and transparent disbursement.
- Education and the Emergence of the 5th Industrial Revolution was the centre piece of the 2025 Annual International Conference of the Faculty of Education as scholars and practitioners explored critical issues shaping the subject matter. We commended the Dean for providing focused leadership.
- The Nigeria Association of Science Students, Faculty of Science, University of Port Harcourt, in recognition and appreciation of our student centred policy presented Beacon of Excellence Award to the Vice-Chancellor.
- We visited the venue of the clinical surgery examination as part of concluding requirements as they continue their final MBBS examination and successful ones will be inducted into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. We commended the untiring and professional efforts of members of staff involved in shaping a generation of Nigeria’s new medical practitioners.
- It was another exciting moment as we fulfilled our academic obligations and administered our scheduled lectures to the 4th year MBBS students.
- We received in audience some student groups who paid a courtesy visit to the University Management to discuss a wide range of issues. The student group is driven by a burning passion to build a team of future change agents.
- The Inaugural Board Meeting of the Energy Technology Institute Board was held to formally commence activities of the Institute. The inauguration had in attendance the representative of the Executive Secretary, PTDF alongside the MD of CypherCrescent. We commended our strategic partners for the collaboration which is aimed at fostering research and innovation in the University.
- Again, the Niger Delta Students Union presented an Award of appreciation to the University Management in recognition of her unwavering support to the growth of the student community.
- In celebration of the 2025 Eid Al-Adha, the University Management joined Muslim faithful around the world to celebrate the significant occasion in the Muslim calendar being a moment that commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s undeniable faith and obedience to Allah. By this we extended our warm regards to the Muslim community in the University.
- Deanship elections were conducted in the faculties of Management Science and Social Sciences as the tenure of the incumbent deans expired. The election which were largely seen as a call to responsibility and service were peaceful. At the end of the exercises Prof. Godfrey Omojefe of the Department of Finance and Banking and Prof. Clever Gbanador of the Department of Economics emerged as deans of the Faculty of Management Sciences and Social Sciences respectively. We charged them to prioritize service over every other consideration.
- Similarly, Prof. C.J. Ogugbue emerged as Dean, Faculty of Science. The Faculty conducted a fresh election as the tenure of Prof. Ehirim draws to an end. We congratulated the new Dean and charged him to creditably discharge his duties.
- We participated at the ASUU, Uniport branch election and congratulated Prof. Omeh Ngwoke and the new set of Excos for their victory at the polls. We also commend the immediate past leadership by Prof. U.D. Chima for their faithful stewardship over the years. We are optimistic of able representation by the new set of ASUU Uniport leadership.
- His Excellency Senator Duoye Diri the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State has accepted to deliver the 35th convocation lecture scheduled to hold during the 35th Convocation ceremony. His Excellency Senator Duoye Diri also accepted to donate a legacy project for the University of Port Harcourt as a way of giving back to the University that trained him in his University days
