
UNIPORT Strengthens SIWES Implementation with Capacity-Building Workshop
The University of Port Harcourt has concluded a two-day workshop aimed at enhancing the administration, supervision, monitoring, and ethical practices of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
The workshop, organised by the Students Industrial Work Experience Unit under the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, brought together Directors, Coordinators, and Supervisors from across the University involved in the planning and implementation of SIWES programme.
Held from Thursday 4th to Friday 5th July 2025, the event took place at the Auditorium of the Africa Centre of Excellence in Public Health and Toxicological Research (ACE PUTOR), University of Port Harcourt.
Declaring the event open, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), Professor Iyeopu Siminialayi—represented by the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Angela Frank-Briggs, commended the Unit for its commitment to capacity building and institutional development. He noted that effective SIWES coordination was critical to preparing students for real-world challenges.
In her welcome remarks, the Director of the SIWES Unit, Professor Adekemi Alagah, highlighted the significance of the scheme in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industrial experience. She described the workshop as part of ongoing efforts to improve quality assurance and stakeholder engagement in the implementation of student work placements.
Facilitators at the workshop were drawn from the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), the federal agency responsible for supervising industrial training schemes in Nigeria. They delivered sessions on best practices in supervision, ethical conduct, documentation, and monitoring.
The interactive programme featured technical presentations, question and answer sessions,as well as feedback engagements designed to foster collaboration and develop strategic frameworks for improving the delivery of SIWES at the University.
