UNIPORT’s 10th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chike Princewill R. Chike, Unveils Bold Eight-Point Strategic Agenda at Inaugural Address

The University of Port Harcourt formally ushered in a new era of leadership and institutional renewal as its 10th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chike Princewill Rewhuamwhu Chike, delivered his Inaugural Address titled “A Shared Vision for a Globally Respected University,” presenting a comprehensive blueprint designed to reposition the institution among Africa’s foremost centres of academic excellence, innovation and global engagement.

Delivered before members of Congregation, the Governing Council, Principal Officers, Senate, staff, students, alumni, traditional rulers, community leaders and distinguished guests, the address marked more than the formal assumption of office by the University’s new Chief Executive. It represented a call to collective responsibility, inviting every stakeholder to participate in shaping the University’s future.

Throughout the presentation, Professor Chike consistently returned to one central message: the transformation of the University of Port Harcourt cannot be achieved by one individual, but through a shared vision embraced by the entire University community.

A Moment of Gratitude and Renewal

Opening his address, the Vice-Chancellor expressed profound gratitude to Almighty God and acknowledged the confidence reposed in him by the Federal Government and the Governing Council.

He conveyed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Visitor to the University, for his administration’s commitment to strengthening higher education and national development. He also recognised the contributions of the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, for his enduring commitment to education and human capital development.

The Vice-Chancellor paid special tribute to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Distinguished Senator Mao Ohuabunwo, KSC, whose leadership and support, he noted, had been instrumental in the University’s progress. He equally thanked members of the Governing Council, Senate, Congregation, alumni, students and every stakeholder whose commitment has contributed to building the University’s enviable reputation.

He described the occasion as “a collective moment of renewal, reflection and recommitment”, emphasizing that his appointment represented not merely a personal achievement but a shared opportunity to advance the University’s founding ideals.

Celebrating Fifty Years of Excellence

Reflecting on the University’s journey since its establishment in 1975, Professor Chike celebrated the institution’s remarkable achievements in producing leaders across government, medicine, engineering, law, education, business and the creative industries.

He noted that the University has earned national and international recognition through its distinguished alumni, impactful research and dedicated staff who have sustained academic excellence despite numerous challenges. As the University approaches its Golden Jubilee, he argued that it must now position itself to compete confidently within the rapidly evolving global knowledge economy.

A Shared Vision for a Globally Respected University

At the heart of the Inaugural Address was the Vice-Chancellor’s vision:

“To position the University of Port Harcourt as a globally respected institution distinguished by academic excellence, impactful research, technological innovation, responsible leadership, societal relevance, and sustainable development.”

He explained that this vision would be pursued through an interconnected Eight-Point Strategic Agenda, stressing that each pillar complements the others and together forms a comprehensive framework for institutional transformation.

Eight Pillars for Institutional Transformation

Professor Chike devoted the greater part of his address to explaining the administration’s strategic priorities.

Academic Excellence

He described academic excellence as the heartbeat of every great university, reaffirming that strengthening teaching, learning, curriculum relevance and educational quality would remain the University’s foremost responsibility. Continuous curriculum review, stronger quality assurance, improved postgraduate education, recognition of teaching excellence and unwavering commitment to academic integrity will underpin this pillar.

Research, Innovation and Knowledge Translation

Recognising research as the engine of national development, the Vice-Chancellor announced plans to strengthen research productivity, attract competitive grants, foster interdisciplinary collaboration and commercialise innovations. Research clusters in health, energy, climate, artificial intelligence, agriculture, education and the blue economy will be prioritised to ensure that knowledge generated within the University addresses real societal challenges.

Digital Transformation

One of the defining features of the administration’s agenda is a comprehensive digital transformation programme. Smart campus initiatives, integrated digital administration, electronic document management, improved online learning platforms, cybersecurity enhancement, digital records and evidence-based decision-making will form the backbone of a modern, technology-enabled University. The Vice-Chancellor stressed that technology is no longer optional but essential for transparency, efficiency and service delivery.

Institutional Harmony

Professor Chike underscored the importance of consultation, transparency and mutual respect in university governance. His administration will encourage participatory leadership, strengthen dialogue with staff unions, improve communication across all levels and promote fairness, equity and staff welfare, while fostering a culture of trust and collective responsibility.

Internationalization

To increase the University’s global footprint, the administration intends to expand international partnerships, collaborative research, visiting scholar programmes, academic exchanges and joint degree initiatives. These efforts are expected to enrich teaching, research and innovation while enhancing the University’s international visibility.

Financial Sustainability

Acknowledging the financial realities confronting public universities, Professor Chike outlined plans to diversify institutional revenue through fundraising, endowment development, alumni engagement, research grants, public-private partnerships, consultancy services and responsible resource management. He assured stakeholders that transparency and accountability would remain central to financial governance.

Student Development

The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed that students remain the University’s primary reason for existence. Beyond academic success, he emphasised the importance of entrepreneurship, employability, leadership development, mental health support, industry partnerships and expanded internship opportunities in producing globally competitive graduates who are also socially responsible citizens.

Community Engagement

The final pillar focuses on strengthening the University’s relationship with communities, industry, government and civil society. Community-based research, public policy engagement, environmental sustainability, youth empowerment and health outreach programmes will reinforce the University’s role as an institution whose knowledge serves society.

Investing in People

Recognising that institutions flourish through people, Professor Chike identified staff development, welfare and alumni engagement as critical enablers of success. Capacity building, mentorship, leadership training and improved welfare policies will be prioritised, while alumni will be more actively engaged as ambassadors, mentors, philanthropists and strategic partners in the University’s development.

Chairman of Council Affirms Support

In his goodwill remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Distinguished Senator Mao Ohuabunwo, KSC, congratulated the Vice-Chancellor and assured him of the Council’s unwavering support. He urged the University community to embrace the administration’s vision and work collaboratively to sustain the institution’s reputation for excellence, emphasizing that effective governance thrives where leadership is matched by cooperation, discipline and shared commitment.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Welcomes the New Vision

Earlier, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) welcomed members of Congregation and described the inaugural address as an important milestone in the University’s history. He noted that the Vice-Chancellor’s strategic agenda provides a clear framework for institutional growth and called on staff to contribute actively toward its successful implementation through professionalism, innovation and teamwork.

A Call to Collective Action

The concluding section of the address returned to its central theme: transformation is a shared endeavour. Professor Chike invited staff, students, alumni, government, industry and host communities to unite in building a stronger, smarter, more innovative and globally competitive University of Port Harcourt.

He urged the University community to be guided by excellence, integrity, accountability, innovation, service and compassion; to honour the institution’s rich past while embracing the future; and to work together in building a university that future generations will celebrate with pride.

As the inaugural congregation came to a close, the atmosphere was one of optimism and renewed purpose. The Vice-Chancellor’s address did more than articulate priorities—it offered a compelling vision for the next chapter in the University’s history, anchored in partnership, innovation and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
