CHRONICLES FROM THE FACULTY OF SCIENCE (July 7 – July 18)

1). One of the distinguished academic icons of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Gideon O. Abu, a renowned Professor of Process and Environmental Microbiology, was honoured on Wednesday, 9th July 2025, during the 19th Valedictory Senate Session, following his recent retirement from active service. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Prof. Abu for his exceptional and invaluable contributions to the development of the Faculty, the University, and the broader scientific community.We also express our sincere gratitude to the Vice Chancellor and the University Management for bestowing this well-deserved honour on one of our own who served with distinction, integrity, and unwavering dedication.

2). Between 10th and 16th July 2025, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. C. J. Ogugbue, and his team undertook a familiarization tour of the various departments within the Faculty. The tour featured interactive and engaging sessions with departmental staff, fostering stronger bonds and open dialogue. During these visits, the Dean and his team listened attentively to the concerns and challenges expressed by staff members. Their presence and constructive engagement served as a strong boost to staff morale and reinforced their sense of commitment to the Faculty’s collective goals.

3). In collaboration with UNIPORT-LISA, the Department of Mathematics/Statistics organized a free two-day workshop on research methodology and data analysis for postgraduate and final-year students. The event, which was held between 14th and 15th July 2025, was a resounding success, drawing over 30 participants, including some academic staff. The workshop delivered practical insights into modern research practices and statistical analysis, equipping participants with essential skills for academic and professional advancement.

4). The Executive Committee of the Nigerian Association of Microbiology Students (NAMS) of the University of Port Harcourt generously donated a brand new public address system and two big waste bins for the MBS lecture halls to the Department of Microbiology on Monday, 7th July. Their noble and altruistic gesture is commendable.

5). Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). students of Medical Microbiology presented seminars on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th, July. Staff of the Department were on ground to assess the students and provide insightful feedback.
