  1. Faculty Graduate Studies Committee Reviews First Semester Results.

The Faculty Graduate Studies Committee held its meeting on Tuesday, 11th November 2025. During the session, the Committee reviewed the First Semester results for the 2024/2025 academic session and made key recommendations aimed at strengthening academic quality and enhancing the administration of postgraduate programmes.

  1. Faculty Management Committee Sets Measures for 2025/2026 First Semester Resumption

The Faculty Management Committee met on Thursday, 13th November 2025. The meeting focused on matters relating to the resumption of studies for the First Semester of the 2025/2026 academic session. Appropriate measures were put in place to ensure a smooth and successful semester.

  1. Microbiology Department Concludes Successful Project Defences for 400 Level Students

The Department of Microbiology successfully conducted project defences for its 400 Level students from the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sets. The exercise, held from Monday, 10th November to Wednesday, 12th November, provided students the opportunity to present and defend their final-year research projects before the departmental panel.

  1. Faculty Member Contributes to New IARC Pesticide Cancer Evaluation

Prof. Sunny Abarikwu of the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, served on the expert drafting team for IARC Monographs Volume 140, which evaluated the carcinogenicity of atrazine, alachlor, and vinclozolin. The assessment was conducted in Lyon, France, and the results have now been published in The Lancet Oncology, highlighting the Faculty’s continued impact on global scientific and public-health research.

  1. Department of Pure & Industrial Chemistry Presents 11 M.Sc. Candidates for Viva Voce Examination

The Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry successfully presented 11 M.Sc. candidates of the 2024/2025 academic session for their viva voce examination on Friday, 14th November 2025, at the Dean’s Common Room.
This event marks an important milestone in the Department’s commitment to the advancement of postgraduate scholarship.

  1. AEB Department Holds Mop-Up Seminar for PhD and PGD Students

The Department of Animal and Environmental Biology successfully conducted a mop-up seminar for its PhD and PGD students on 11th November 2025.

  1. PSB Department Presents Undergraduate Candidates for External Viva Voce

The Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology successfully presented its 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 undergraduate candidates for their external viva voce examination, held from Monday 10th to Tuesday 11th November 2025.

  1. Biochemistry Postgraduate Students Deliver Successful Seminar Presentations

Postgraduate students of the Department of Biochemistry successfully presented their seminar papers on Thursday, 13th November 2025, marking another step in the department’s commitment to strong academic and research engagement.

  1. Mathematics & Statistics Department Holds Successful Seminars for M.Sc. and Ph.D. Students

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics successfully conducted academic seminars for its M.Sc. and Ph.D. students on Tuesday, 18th November 2025. The sessions provided a platform for postgraduate students to engage in scholarly discourse,and defend their research progress.

  1. Faculty of Science Staff Deliver 41st Valedictory Lecture

The University marked its 41st Valedictory Lecture on Thursday, 20th November 2025, at the CBN Auditorium,. Prof. Joyce Oronne Akaninwor of the Department of Biochemistry delivered an insightful lecture titled: “The stomach and its neighbours have deaf ears to economic and technical languages of food insecurity.” The event brought together faculty members, colleagues, and the university community, showcasing the Faculty’s commitment to academic excellence and thought leadership.

  1. Mathematics & Statistics Presents Undergraduate Students for External Viva Voce Examination

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics presented its 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 undergraduate students for their external viva voce examination on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th November 2025.

  1. Physics Department Records Successful Postgraduate Defences

Three PhD candidates and one MSc student from the Department of Physics successfully defended their theses and dissertation at the Graduate School on Wednesday, 19 November 2025. The defence panels were chaired by the external examiner, Prof. Ezekiel Agbalagba, Vice-Chancellor of FUPRE. Also in attendance was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, lending grace and prominence to the session.

  1. Geology Department Conducts Successful Undergraduate Viva Voce Examinations

The Department of Geology successfully presented its 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 undergraduate students for their viva voce examinations on Monday, 17th, and Tuesday, 18th November 2025. The examinations provided an opportunity for students to defend their research projects before a panel of examiners.

  1. Physics MSc Student Showcases Innovative IoT Home Security System

A Physics MSc student successfully defended his dissertation on “Intelligent IoT-Based Home Security System,” featuring a smart door that grants remote access and detects intruders. The Faculty applauds this achievement and commends the student’s supervisors, Prof. Greg Avwiri and Dr. E.B. Otokunefor, as well as the Department of Physics for fostering innovation.

  1. Faculty of Science Represented on Scientific Committee of 1st African Metabolomics Conference

The Faculty of Science is proud to announce that Prof. C.B. Chikere of the Department of Microbiology has been appointed to the Scientific Committee of the 1st African Metabolomics Conference, scheduled to hold in South Africa in 2026. Organized by the Metabolomics South Africa Society, this prestigious appointment offers a significant opportunity for the Faculty to be actively involved and showcased on the continental stage.
