₦10 Million Scholarship Awarded to 100 Indigent Students: The Engr. Gesi Asamaowei Scholarship Scheme

Scholarship schemes remain vital instruments for promoting access to education, reducing financial barriers, and supporting students with academic potential who face economic challenges.

Reflecting a strong commitment to inclusive education and human capital development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, together with the Management of the University, has continued to champion initiatives that expand access to education, uplift indigent students, and strengthen the University’s culture of compassion, excellence, and social responsibility.

It was indeed an incredible moment on Thursday 18th December 2025, as some members of the Governing Council, University Management, Staff, Parents, and students gathered for the scholarship award ceremony for 100 students.

The scholarship, valued at Ten Million Naira (₦10,000,000), was generously donated by a benefactor, Engr. Gesi Asamaowei. It is interesting to mention that Engr. Asamaowei was a former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University of Port Harcourt Governing Council.

By the scholarship award, each beneficiary receives ₦100,000, aimed at covering one academic session’s school fees and providing support for basic logistics. Letters of Scholarship Award were presented to the one hundred students who are beneficiaries of the Engr. Gesi Asamaowei Scholarship Scheme.

The scholarship was targeted at indigent students, easing the financial burden on their families and enabling the students to continue their education without interruption.

Parents at the event expressed profound joy and appreciation for the timely intervention, describing it as a major relief. The beneficiaries were equally elated, noting that the scholarship would significantly boost their morale and academic focus. The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the beneficiaries to judiciously utilise the opportunity and reminded them of the need to always show proper respect to administrators and institutional leadership.

The initiative was widely applauded by principal officers, members of staff, parents and guardians, as a powerful demonstration of dedication to education, equity, and human capital development.

A special and heartfelt appreciation was extended to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, whose exceptional magnanimity, compassion, and visionary leadership gave birth to the scholarship awards initiative. His unwavering commitment to student welfare and inclusive education continues to open doors of opportunity for indigent students and stands as a shining example of purposeful and people-centred leadership.
