University of Port Harcourt Launches TAGDev 2.0 to Drive Agricultural Transformation in Africa

In a landmark step towards agricultural and national development across Africa, the University of Port Harcourt has officially launched the Transforming African Agricultural Development (TAGDev) 2.0 program. Spearheaded by the Mastercard Foundation in collaboration with RUFORUM and twelve universities across Africa, this initiative aims to foster sustainable agricultural transformation and food security.

The launch event, held at the University of Port Harcourt, was attended by an array of distinguished guests, stakeholders, academics, and participants drawn from partner institutions across the continent. Prof Owunari Georgewill, Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, emphasized the institution’s commitment to this significant initiative, noting that the university’s involvement underscores its dedication to national and regional development through agriculture.

TAGDev 2.0 is designed to promote fully-funded education for students at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, with a focus on agricultural development. The program also aims to support the growth of startups and spinoffs to strengthen the agricultural value chain in Africa. Participants highlighted the collaborative nature of the initiative, with a shared commitment to ensuring its success and impactful outcomes.

The event featured a series of activities, including workshops, interactive sessions, and presentations from experts and stakeholders. Discussions centered on the need for broad stakeholder engagement to ensure the sustainability and success of TAGDev 2.0, with participants unanimously agreeing on the importance of shared responsibility in driving positive outcomes for African agriculture.
