Your Health, Your Wealth: The Importance of Annual Medical Check-Ups

Introduction
As we approach the end of another year, it is important to pause and reflect not just on our accomplishments, but also on our health. The University community has sadly lost some valued members this year, many to sudden or preventable illnesses. While life is unpredictable, we can take steps to protect ourselves through regular medical check-ups.
Why Annual Medical Checks Matter
A yearly health examination is not only for those who feel unwell. It is a vital preventive measure that detects diseases early and helps maintain overall wellbeing. Many chronic illnesses, including hypertension, diabetes, and cancer, progress silently and only become apparent when complications arise. Early detection through routine screening can save lives.
What to Include in a Yearly Health Check
A comprehensive check should include the following:
- Blood pressure, Blood sugar, and cholesterol levels
- Kidney and liver function tests
- Weight and body mass index (BMI)
- Eye and dental examinations
- Cancer screenings (cervical, breast, prostate, colon)
- Mental health assessment
Consequences of Neglect
Many untimely deaths result from preventable or manageable illnesses. Ignoring routine health checks can lead to sudden medical crises such as cerebrovascular accident (CVA), also known as stroke; myocardial infarction or acute coronary syndrome (heart attack). Cardiac arrest, Diabetic Crisis, Respiratory failure, Hypertensive Crisis, Epileptic crisis, anaphylactic reactions, etc; decreased productivity, and emotional distress for families and colleagues. Regular monitoring helps detect problems early when they are easiest to treat.
Healthy Living Tips
In addition to your annual check-up
- Eat balanced meals and stay hydrated
- Get regular exercise
- Get adequate sleep
- Manage stress and make time for rest
- Avoid excessive salt, sugar, and alcohol
- Seek medical attention early for unusual symptoms
