THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT
The following events took place in the University from Monday 19th-23rd January, 2026
- University-based unions are vital stakeholders in the governance and administration of the University. Accordingly, we received the Executive members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), University of Port Harcourt Chapter, led by Comrade Michael Ezebaraba, for discussions focused on strengthening the existing relationship between University Management and the unions, as well as addressing matters concerning the welfare of staff. The University Management reiterated its commitment to maintaining a healthy, cordial, and mutually beneficial relationship with all unions as the current administration approaches its conclusion.
- The partnership between the Chinese Government and the University of Port Harcourt has been further strengthened, as the University of Port Harcourt welcomed a Chinese teacher, seconded by our partner University in China, to enhance teaching and research in Chinese language stidies.
- The orientation exercise for newly admitted students of the 2025/2026 academic session was held on Tuesday, 20th January, 2026, with the aim of familiarizing the new intakes with the University’s rich academic culture and vibrant learning environment. As a citadel of academic excellence, speakers from various sections of the University emphasized the importance of prioritizing academics, mental health, personal security, and moral integrity, while avoiding negative vices. Students were also encouraged to consult the University’s Student Academic Handbook to fully understand their rights, responsibilities, and obligations.
- The University of Port Harcourt, through the Offshore Technology Institute (OTI), continues its partnership with the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) in building capacity in Mechatronics Engineering among selected Ogoni youths. During the program, we emphasized to the trainees that the true value of the three-month training lies not only in the certification obtained but, more importantly, in the practical skills and knowledge gained. We commended the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for empowering HYPREP to undertake this critical initiative in addressing the longstanding environmental pollution challenges, and also extended our appreciation to the Project Coordinator, Prof. Zabbey, for his focused and effective leadership.
- The University received in audience the Flag Officer Commanding, Naval Training Command of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral E. A. Zipele, who, alongside a delegation of his officers, paid a courtesy visit to the University. The visit formed part of ongoing discussions aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between the University and the Naval Training Command.
- The University of Port Harcourt has taken delivery of additional electric tricycles from TETFund under the Renewed Hope Initiative, a program designed to enhance affordable transportation across tertiary institutions. The initial batch of these tricycles is now operational at the University’s Abuja campus. The University expresses its sincere appreciation to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for this ongoing support.
- The Community Service Unit of the University organized a sensitization seminar to educate students and members of the community on the importance of community service, social responsibility, and active civic engagement. The seminar provided participants with valuable insights into how individual and collective efforts can contribute to sustainable community development. Resource persons addressed key issues such as volunteerism, ethical leadership, and the role of citizens in fostering positive social change.
- The new School of Graduate Studies building was formally commissioned. The event was witnessed by the University’s principal officers, the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, and other senior management staff, and graduate students.
- The University of Port Harcourt received Prof. Kota Sudhakar, Vice-Chancellor of Hensard University, alongside members of his management team. Fruitful deliberations were held on potential areas of collaboration between both institutions. We also commended Prof. Kota Sudhakar for his bold initiative to forge a close partnership with the University of Port Harcourt.
- The University participated in the Service of Songs held in reverent memory of the late Apostle Tamuno-Ojuemi Humphrey Ogaji, in solemn solidarity with a member of staff and Director of ACE-PUTOR, Prof. Daprim Ogaji who is a son of the deceased. We extended our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and offered prayers for the eternal repose of the soul of the departed, praying that God grants the family comfort and fortitude during this period of mourning
