THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT

The following events took place from Monday 25th to Friday 29th August, 2025

  1. We received the updated compendium containing academic programmes and curriculum of faculties, centres, institutes and departments in the University showing their governance structures and academic calendar. The updated 2025 Academic Brief showcases the growth and improvement of the University as it serves as a vital reference document for staff and regulatory bodies such as NUC, TetFund, Federal Ministry of Education amongst others. We commended the Director, Academic Planning, Prof. Eucharia Nwaichi and her team for providing such detailed guide.
  2. The Committee of Provost and Deans (CPD) met to consider the outcome of the recently concluded Post-UTME exercise. After exhaustive discussion of the performance analysis for the 2025/2026 exercise, CPD approved a minimum tolerable score of 120 as the general Post-UTME cut-off point.
  3. We received a delegation from the Nigeria Association of Pharmacists in Academia on a thank you visit after the successful hosting of their Conference in the University. An Award of Appreciation was presented to the University Management in recognition of our support and participation at the 25th Scientific Annual Conference.
  4. We received members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) and had discussions on partnership in the fight against illicit use of drugs, cultism and other vices in line with the group’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign. We also received a Certificate of Partnership from Amb. Voke Emore – Chairman, Rivers State Command.
  5. In our bid to bridge the gap between town and gown, the University Entrepreneurial Centre collaborated with Winners Chapel Church to train selected youths on different skills acquisition programmes. We charged the trainees to use their new skills for career advancement and as a springboard for improved business opportunities.
  6. We received a joint team from TETFund and NUC on tour of our facilities to assess the suitability of the University of Port Harcourt for the TetFund Academic intervention in selected tenable institutions in Nigeria. In the Exit Meeting, we commended them for the professionalism they brought to bear in the discharge of the assignment.
  7. We joined the Catholic Chaplaincy, Chapel of Annunciation, University of Port Harcourt to receive Most Rev. Patrick Eluke on his Bishopric visit to the University. Prayers were offered for grace upon the ministry of the Bishop and for continued progress, unity, and uplifting of the University of the University of Port Harcourt through the mercies of God.
  8. Prof. Ibisime Etela of the Faculty of Agriculture emerged winner of the keenly contested election of Senate Representative in Council. The Senate election was held on Wednesday 27th August, 2025 for the replacement of Prof. Chukwudi Onyeaso who now serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration)
  9. The University of Port Harcourt has maintained her sterling record of winning medals. We are glad to announce that Christabel Amakuro from Team Uniport won a bronze medal in the Taekwondo category at the international championships where she represented Nigeria.
  10. Our friends have done it again as Engr OluwaMuyiwa Nelson Kosile our expanded his support to 100 students from his initial 50 students. The beneficiaries would have their 2025/2026 tuition fees paid with a stipend for upkeep. We deeply appreciate Engr. Kosile O. Nelson and all our other friends for their unwavering support.
  11. The School of Public Health presented a Platinum Award in recognition of our support towards the overall good of the School.
  12. Similarly, we received a Certificate of Recognition as Best Student-Friendly Vice-Chancellor by the U2020/2021 students of the Department of Education Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Faculty of Education. We are deeply honored by the confidence of our students in the 9th Administration and reiterate our commitment to our students.
  13. The Department of Nursing Science emerged as Best Performing Department in the professional examination conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. We commend the Department and urged them not to relent on their oars.
  14. We received a letter of commendation and notification for the conferment of Outstanding Merit Award by the National Association of Nigerian Student (NANS) in recognition of our concerted effort towards advancing the welfare of students in the University of Port Harcourt.
  15. We participated in the 2nd Annual International Conference of the Department of Educational Foundation with the Theme “Harnessing Innovations for Sustainable Future”. The event which held in the University had in distinguished audience from all walks of life.
  16. We also participated the 28th Public Lecture Series of the Faculty of Management Sciences delivered by Professor Ikechukwu Francis Asiegbu. The lecture focused on “Robust Business Health: Cardinal instrumentals and vital consummatory”. We commended the Dean of Management for sustaining the lecture series by stimulating real time discussions.
  17. We joined the the College of Health Sciences to honor Prof. I. M. Siminialayi, the immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor (R&D) and Prof. Angela I. Frank-Briggs, the immediate Past Provost. At the send-forth ceremony, members of staff, families and friends poured accolades on them for their meritorious services.
  18. We held robust discussion on solar power distribution to UPTH and host communities. We are hopeful of imminent commissioning and appropriate distribution.
