TWO WEEKS RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT
The following events took place in the University from Monday 24th November, 2025 to Friday 5th December, 2025
- We are glad to announce that our students in the Department of Accounting, emerged as the overall winners at the 2nd edition of ICAN Port Harcourt and District Society Quiz competition for tertiary institutions in Rivers State, having won the maiden competition last year. We commend Dr. Henry Wobo and his team for providing academic guidance.
- We had a team from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority at the University to carry out a career awareness campaign on prospects in the Aviation Industry. We commended the Management of the NCAA for this initiative and collaboration.
- As part of programmes to deepen intercultural learning and international cooperation, the Window to China in the University of Port Harcourt organized Hands-On Culinary Workshop, introducing students to the art of preparing traditional Chinese dumplings and fried rice. We commend the Bursar, Dr. Godpower Obah for being present at the session. We are optimistic that the Window will continue to promote global competence and advance constructive China-Niger Delta engagements.
- The University of Port Harcourt received some electric tricycle from the Federal Government, the project was facilitated by TetFund as part of Renewed Hope Campus Transport Scheme of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
By adopting these electric tricycles, the university will embrace clean energy and promote an environmentally friendly transportation system - We participated at the Trans-National Education Summit organized by the British Council in Abuja. The event was aimed at deepening national diversity, capacity building and actualization of Sustainable Development Goals.
- We hosted several teams from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the accreditation of Social Works Department in the Faculty of Social Sciences, as well as for the Film and Multimedia, Broadcasting and Journalism programs in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Rosemary Ogu, represented the Vice-Chancellor in conducting both the welcome and exit meetings for the teams, and we are optimistic of positive report of the accreditation exercise. - We were guest at the Niger Delta University to deliver the keynote address at their Maiden Post-graduate School Conference. The 3-day event, focused on strengthening the nexus between the industry and society as universities must not only publish research findings but also transform futures. Participants at the conference underscored the need to build knowledge economy rooted in equity, ethics and excellence.
- We celebrated an Alumnus of our great institution, Ebimoboere Eniyekpemi, the CEO Afritropic Farming and Agro Services Ltd. A graduate of Plant Science and Biotechnology who is now revolutionizing agriculture through by adopting the green house farming initiative.
- We had a brief stop over at the venue of the Part II MBBS professional examinations in Pathology and Pharmacology for the 4th year medical students. We commended the Provost, College of Health Sciences and the Dean of the Faculty, Basic Clinical Sciences for the smooth conduct of the examination.
- We are glad to announce that the University of Port Harcourt is now powered by solar system. This feat will now ensure that the perennial problem of power challenge has been solved due to the initiative of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu renewed hope intervention to the University. By this, the university will now have improved effective and efficient service delivery.
- The University of Port Harcourt was host to the 2nd CANDIX Inter-Secondary Karate competition. The competition which had karate athletes from different secondary schools in Rivers State compete for honours in two different categories. We commend Engr. Amakiri Oruamabo for the training to equip students with relevant skills for mental alertness and combat skills.
- We received Distinguished Service Education Award from the Researchment Academy in appreciation of our visionary leadership and commitment to promoting academic excellence
- While on official assignment in Abuja, the Vice-Chancellor received members of staff who were in the nation’s capital for the kick-off meeting of the MESITA Programme organized by the European Union. The stakeholders’ meeting on the Master’s Degree Programme in SMART Farming is expected to discuss, among other matters, the programme’s objectives and implementation plans. We wished them successful and productive deliberations.
- The University of Port Harcourt is sad to announce the death of Professor Barisua Nwinee of the Department of Finance & Banking, Faculty of Management Sciences. The Management of the University paid a condolence visit to the family on Saturday, 29th November, 2025. Still in his honour, the University Management participated at the Day of Tributes organized by the Uniport Ogoni Assembly as mark of respect for the late Prof. B. F. Nwinee on Friday 5th December, 2025 at the Law Auditorium. We pray for the peaceful repose of his soul
- The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari A. Georgewill led the University of Port Harcourt and other Nigerian universities delegation and TAGDev 2.0 partners to the 21st Annual General Meeting of RUFORUM at the Gaborone International Convention Centre, Botswana. The meeting provided an important platform for the University to deepen it’s collaboration with RUFORUM and advance it’s commitment to strengthening agricultural education and capacity development across Africa. At the event, the University of Port Harcourt was adjudged qualified to become member of the African Agribusiness Incubators Network. We commend the TAGDEV. 2.0 Programme Coordinator, Prof. Ibisime Etela who convinced us to make proposals and submit documents for bid in Botswana.
- The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari A. Georgewill ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (R&D) Professor Angela Frank-Briggs declared the one-week capacity training programme organized by the Bursar, Dr. Godpower Obah for members of the Bursary Department to enable them learn, relearn and up skill for efficient and effective service delivery.
- In continuation of our Exchange Programme with the Babes Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, Prof. Fidelis Allen led some members of staff to the University on an Erasmus sponsored staff mobility programme.
- The Registry Department of the University of Port Harcourt rolls out the drums in celebration of the 14th Registry Week Celebration. The event which commenced on Monday, 1st December – Thursday, 4th December 2025 had series of events like free medical checks, health walk, cultural display, football match between the Registry and Bursary Department, Registry Day Lecture and Gala night. A beautifully crafted acrylic frame was presented to the digital Vice-Chancellor for his support towards the successful hosting od the 2025 Registry Week. We commend the dynamic leadership of the Registrar Dr. Gloria O. Chindah and members of the Registry Week Committee for the well organized and attended celebration.
- We received a delegation from the National Universities Commission for accreditation exercise for the Faculty of Dentistry, College of Health Sciences. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Chukwudi Onyeaso received the delegation on behalf of the University Management for both welcome and exit meetings. The team were conducted through the exercise by the Director of Academic Planning and her team and members of staff of the Faculty of Dentistry and we are hopeful of a positive accreditation report
- The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Development), represented the Vice-Chancellor and the University at the 36th and 37th Convocation Ceremonies of Rivers State University, conveying our goodwill message to the University’s Management and students.
- We received our industry partners from NNPC and Renaissance Africa Energy Limited on a courtesy visit and had fruitful deliberations on the Shell Aret Adams Professorial Chair, University of Port Harcourt.
- The College of Health Sciences will next week organize a valedictory session to honor its retiring staff. We send our sincere gratitude for their outstanding service and impactful contributions to both the College and the University.
- The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill represented the President and Commander in Chief of the Nigeria Armed Forces, H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 51st Convocation and 55th Founders Day Celebration of the University of Benin. In the presidential speech delivered by Prof. Georgewill, the President Congratulated the University and urged graduands to embrace the lofty initiatives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
