rofessor Brilliant Ogagaoghene AGAVIEZOR is a Professor of Animal Breeding and Molecular Genetics in the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. His professorship which was recently approved by the Council of his university was backdated to 2020 when he applied for the position. He is a registered Animal Science (RAS 723). Prof. Agaviezor had his B. Tech (Animal Production and Health) degree from the Federal University of Technology, Akure in 2001 and his M.Agric (Animal Breeding and Genetics) degree from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in 2005 and later his Ph.D (Animal Breeding and Genetics) from the same university 2011. Prof. Agaviezor however was a visiting student in the Department of Animal Science, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA where he had his PhD bench work on “Microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA analysis of Nigerian sheep breeds”, under the supervision of Prof. O. A. Adebambo. He was also a Research Assistant at Imumorin Lab of the same Department of Animal Science, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA.
Prof. Agaviezor is the immediate past Head of Department and currently holds different positions in the Department, Faculty and in the University of Port Harcourt. He was a visiting Professor to the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Malawi and now an External Examiner in this Department and many others in Nigeria. Prof. Agaviezor has supervised 37 undergraduate students, 2 Postgraduate Diploma students, 5 MSc students and 4 PhD students. He has examined 25 postgraduate students in nationally and internationally during their final defense.
More so, Prof. Agaviezor is a member of professional bodies like Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN), Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP) and World Poultry Science Association Nigeria Branch. He is also a reviewer to many scientific journals globally.
Prof. Agaviezor research is geared towards understanding the genetic structure and diversity of Nigerian livestock breeds at the molecular level for better policies in livestock improvement and conservation. He has different conference proceedings and 74 publications to his credit. His statistics with Google Scholar are: citations are 550, h-index is 14 and i10-index is 17. He has attracted different grants for research. He has different ongoing researches in the field of genetics and molecular biology in livestock, fish and humans with collaborators from different institutions in Nigeria and overseas.
Prof. Agaviezor is happily married to Dr. Dorathy T. Agaviezor with a son, Ufuoma and three girls, Afokoghene, Ewomazino and Eniwoareke
