Brief Biography

Etiido Effiongwilliam Inyang is a visual communication designer, printmaker, and design historian. He is currently Professor of Visual Communication Design and Printmaking and serves as Head of the Department of Fine Arts and Design (FAD) at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
He holds a BA in Industrial Design (Graphics) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; an MFA in Graphics from the University of Uyo; and a PhD in African History from the University of Port Harcourt. His international academic appointments include a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Northwestern University, USA (2008–2009); a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria, South Africa (2015–2016); a Visiting Research Scholarship under the NIHSS, South Africa; and participation in the International Staff Week (ISW) at MKE HUFA, Budapest (2025), facilitated through an Erasmus KA-171 grant to strengthen ties between UNIPORT and HUFA.
Inyang began his academic career at the University of Port Harcourt in 1989. His administrative leadership includes serving as Head of the University Press Limited and Chairman of the FAD Postgraduate Board, along with contributing to curriculum development, postgraduate training, and quality assurance across Nigerian and South African institutions.
Between 2003 and 2009, Inyang collaborated with UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Rivers State Government on public health campaigns, developing Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials for HIV/AIDS prevention and the Roll Back Malaria program. Notably, he coordinated a four-volume illustrated cartoon storybook on malaria prevention for primary school children—a project evaluated for national implementation by the Federal Ministry of Health, demonstrating the power of visual communication in behavioral change.
As an artist and designer, Inyang developed the off-screen serigraphic counter-proofing technique, a recognized contribution to contemporary printmaking practice. He has participated in major global events, including Dak’Art, Senegal (2008); ARESUVA, Abuja (2008); The Dragonfly Print Portfolio, Houston, USA (2013); SAVAHA, South Africa (2016); Biafra: 50 Years After, Dominican University, USA (2017); and ISW at MKE HUFA, Budapest (2025). His works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art (Nigeria), Northwestern University (USA), the Imago Mundi Collection (Italy), and The Printing Museum (Houston). He also served on the national jury panel for the Life in My City Art Festival, LIMCAF (2023). Inyang is a Fellow of the Society of Nigerian Artists (FSNA), a founding member of the Graphic Design Association of Nigeria (GDA), a founding Trustee of the Pan African Design Institute (PADI), and a registered advertising practitioner.
His research spans graphic design history, visual communication, printmaking, and African visual culture. His doctoral thesis examined Nigerian Civil War visual propaganda and national identity. With over 46 scholarly publications, his current work focuses on Nigerian graphic design history, visual communication during health emergencies, and the standardization of creative arts scholarship
