Brief Biography

Dr. Nnenna Jennifer Omorodion is a Reader in Food Microbiology and Public Health in the Department of Microbiology. She obtained her Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree from the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), graduating with a Second Class Upper Division. She earned her Master's degree in Food Microbiology with Distinction and subsequently obtained her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Food Microbiology, both from the University of Port Harcourt.

Dr. Omorodion is an accomplished academic, researcher, and mentor with extensive experience in teaching, research, and postgraduate supervision. Her research focuses on food microbiology, food safety, public health, foodborne pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, and the epidemiology of foodborne diseases. Her Ph.D. research investigated the occurrence and characterization of Listeria and Salmonella in organic and conventional chicken meat, contributing to the understanding of food safety and public health risks associated with poultry products.

She has supervised over 100 undergraduate research projects and more than five postgraduate students, demonstrating a strong commitment to academic excellence and capacity building. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and the application of microbiological principles to address real-world food safety and public health challenges.

Dr. Omorodion has authored and co-authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles published in reputable national and international journals. Her research has significantly contributed to the fields of food microbiology and public health, particularly in the detection, characterization, and control of foodborne pathogens, food quality assurance, and food safety.

Her current research interests include foodborne pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, molecular microbiology, food safety and quality assurance, public health microbiology, microbial risk assessment, and the development of strategies for improving food safety and protecting public health. She remains actively engaged in collaborative research, academic mentorship, and community outreach aimed at promoting safe food practices and advancing public health.
