THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT ( Monday 3rd – Friday 14th April, 2023 )

The following events took place in the University from Monday 3rd - Friday 14th April, 2023._

 

1. We recieved the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku who was on a one day working visit to the University. The current NDDC MD is a worthy alumnus of the University. We held very fruitful discussions as partners in progress. 

 

2. On a sad note, we received the news of the death of our 5th Vice-Chancellor and the current Chairman, Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigeria Universities, Emeritus Professor Nimi Dimkpa Briggs, who passed on at the age of 79 years. The immeasurable impact of Professor Briggs on Education, Medical Practice and the Nigeria Polity earned him international stays snd a worthy scholar. The University has therefore opened condolence registers at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Senate building, the College of Health Sciences and at the University Sports Institute, while all University flags are flown at half mast. The Vice-Chancellor through a communication from the family of Professor Briggs, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Burial Committee.

 

3. We paid unscheduled visits to classrooms to assess the level of compliance to the commencement of lectures after the Easter holidays. We were impressed with the turnout of both lecturers and students, although we noted few exceptions.

 

4. The Vice-Chancellor was personally on ground to administer his Part II MBBS lecture.

 

5. In a bid to expanding our teaching programmes, we recieved the NUC Resource Verification Teams for eight (8) new undergraduate programmes. The new degree programmes are in the Faculties of: Communication & Media Studies, Allied Health Sciences, Agriculture and Computing. We urged the visiting Teams to discharge the assignment with utmost responsibility.

 

6. As the University prepares to transit from the BPharm to Pharm D as currently been run, we received a high powered resource verification team led by experts from the NUC. We are hopeful of commencing the Pharm D programme soon as we expect approval from NUC. 

 

7. As a bedrock for University development and advancement, we hosted an interactive session with beneficiaries of TETfund Institutional Based Research. The aim of the interactive session was to galvanize the research grant beneficiaries for greater and more productive research outcomes. Professor Joseph Ajienka, our former Vice-Chancellor was on hand to guide the discussion.

 

 8. We participated in the orientation programme of newly admitted candidates into the School of Basic Studies pre-degree programme. The exercise exposed the candidates to the rules and regulations of the University and some guidance and psychology , security, academic and moral advice were given to the candidates towards excellent academic performance.

 

9. We attended a customer-based forum event organized by the United Bank of Africa at the Hotel Presidential. 

 

10. The Vice-Chancellor recieved a corporate award of excellence from the Coalition of Northern Nigerian Ethnic Youth Leaders (CONNEYL) 

 

11. We received in courtesy the executives of the Graduate Students Association 

 

12. We took delivery of furniture (40 refrigerators, 120 office tables, 120 office chairs, 240 visitors chairs) as part of TETFund 2020 intervention to the University

 

13. We held exit meetings for some NUC Resource Verification Teams. 

 

14. At the 5th South South Zonal Executive Council meeting of SSANU held at the University, we assured the Union of our solidarity while receiving commendations for our staff friendly policies.
