OBJECTIVES

  • Student must be able to achieve a scientific foundation sufficient for understanding the principle of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • Student must be able to acquire adequate knowledge, attitude, and skill/clinical competence for the performance of various oral maxillofacial procedures expected of a dental surgeon.

    Principles of oral sugery the operation room,

    Instruments, the surgical teams.

    Basic surgical procedure

    Complications including Facial nerves palsy,

    Parasthesia, haematoma etc, and other sedative techniques

    Extraction of teeth, post-operative management of patient.

    Relationship of maxillary antrum

    Management of impacted tooth third molars and

    Uneruted teeth.

Leaning outcome: Student must be able to take comprehensive history, do thorough examination and diagnose common oral and maxillofacial surgical diseases and formulate adequate treatment plan as well as perform routine extractions.

YEAR 5 SECOND SEMESTER

OMS 506.2                                          Acute and chronic infections                                                    2 units

    Spread of dental infection, etc.

    Salivary glands infections

    Diagnosis and treatment of cysts of the jaws

    Management of oral tumours:

                                  Benign and Malignant tumours

                                  Trauma:

                                  Soft tissue injuries,

                        Principles of management of facial fractures

                        Fractures of the mandible

                        Middle third fractures,

                        General management of middle third fractures,

                        Complications of fractures

Learning outcome: Student must be able to manage uncomplicated orofacial infections and simple fractures

OMS 606.1                                       Cleft of the face                                                                        2 Units

                                     Introduction to orthognatic surgery

                                     Cleft lip and palate

                                     Plastic surgery – types and techniques of skin grafts

                                     Treatment of scars. Burns, keloids

                                     General principles of grafting-Allelograph

Leaning outcome: Student must be familiar with all congenital orofacial disorders and be able to outline the treatment.

OMS 606.1 (Clinical)                                                                                                      6 units

YEAR 6 SECOND SEMESTER

OMS 606.2                                        Diseases and Treatment of                                                   2 units

                                     Temporo-mandibular joint

                                     Surgical preparation for denture construction

                                     Apicectomy and restoration , root filling

                                     Surgical aids to prosthetics, oral implants

                                     Management of emergencies

Learning outcome: Student must be conversant with all TMJ diseases and do adequate planning for pre-prosthetic surgery as well as recognize and manage emergency conditions.

OMS 606.2 (Clinical)                                                                                                       6 units

Learning outcome: Student must be able to perform clinical procedures like setting up of IV line, passing of  Naso-gastric tube, insertion of catheter, performance of simple IMF, suturing of simple laceration, debridement and dressing of wounds.
