An endowed chair is among the most important gifts to higher education. It is a vital tool to ensure excellence; the more Chairs a University has endowed, the more prestigious and attractive to potential visibility in terms of research.

An endowment may be established with a sizeable gift to an academic area designated by the donor. This is then used to support the academic and research efforts of the chair occupant appointed by the Vice Chancellor.

Each Chair occupant submits annual report of the past year’s activities and use of endowment funds to the Vice Chancellor; this is forwarded to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (R & D) for review. A copy of the narrative is used in preparing an annual report to donor(s).

Interaction between donor and chair occupant and the University is occasionally held, in the form of seminars, public lectures and research forums.
